Men soar into second at Lane Lane Track Results • Eight first place finishes • Shawn Davis set a school record in the ham& mer, 180‘ 6" • Phil Elie set a personal record and placed fourth in 400 meter, 53.52 Clackamas defeated many four-year universities on their way to several first place finishes at the Cherry Blossom Relays on Saturday. The Cougars will host the Clackamas Invitational on campus, May 3. CHRISTINA MUELLER Feature Editor Men’s Track at Lane Last weekend the men’s and women’s track teams competed in two meets. The first meet, held on Friday, was at Lane Community College. “This was a scoring meet against our league rivals,” said Coach Mike Hodges. The meet is the only scoring meet Clackamas will compete in other than the Championships. The Cougars were just two points from placing first overall in the meet. “We were definitely in a good battle there, and it was a good experience for the team,” Hodges explained. In the field events, Shawn Davis set a new school record in the hammer. The previous school record (178’) in 1994 by Kris Long. Davis’s record setting distance was 180’6”. Behind him was Aaron Stacey with a distance of 126’11”. He placed sec ond. Andy Bradley placed first in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:02.07, Also competing in that event was Evan Goin. He placed eighth with a time of 4:20.53. In the 400 meter, Phil Elie set a per sonal record and placed fourth with a time of 53.52. In the 100-meter hurdles, Chad McIntyre placed second with a time of 16.15. Behind him at 16.64 was Djew Evensen, who placed second and set a personal record. Mark Gibson placed seventh at 18.99. In the 100-meter run Eli Townsend placed third with a time of 11.55. Jeremie Schafer placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 39’ 11.5”. In the pole vault, Eli Townsend made number eight on the all-time list as well as placing first with a distance of 15’6”. Phil Elie placed fourth and set a per sonal season's best with a distance of 13’6”. Jay Hawkey placed second and set a JOEL CORESON / Clackamas Print personal record in the 3000-meter steeplechase. His time was 10:37.77. In the 400-meter hurdles, McIntyre placed first and set a personal record with a time of 58.87. This was his first college victory. Townsend placed second in the long jump with adistance of 21 ’8 Heath Fisher placed sixth at 19’, Schafer placed seventh with a distance of 19’ and Vasili Tsirimiagos placed eighth at 16’6 ¥2”. In the 800 meter, Travis Armstrong placed first and set a new personal record with a time of 1:55.72. Just be hind him was Kasey Johnson at 1:57.86. Dave Lee set a season's best and placed fifth with a time of 2:01.02. Scott Hein placed first in the javelin with a distance of 181’ 5”. Fisher placed second at 179’7”. Jake Curtis placed fourth at 153’2”. In the discus, Shawn Davis placed first and made number five on the all- time list. His distance was 148’3”. Davis also placed first in the shot put. His distance was 46’8”. Her distance was 108’6”. Kristi Chamberlen placed sev enth with a distance of 100’4”. In the pole vault, Kari Davidson placed second with a distance of 8’. Rebecca Graham placed first in the 1500 meter. She set a personal record and earned the only qualifying mark for the weekend. Her time was 4:59.89. This is the first time that she has bro ken the five-minute barrier. In the 800-meter run, Jennifer Rea placed second and set a personal record with a time of 2:34.9. Sharp placed second in the javelin with a distance of 125’7”. In the 100-meter run, Amanda Bra dley placed third with a time of 13.32. Right behind her was Lareina Cota with a time of 13.38. In the high jump Jaimee Brown placed first with a distance of 4’ 11”. Chamberlen placed fifth in the dis cus with a distance of 118’. In the 200 meter, Cota placed fourth with a time of 28.00. In the 3000 meter, Kendel White placed first with a time of 10:50.95. Mishe Simantel came in second and set a personal record with a time of 11:18.87. Men at Cherry Blossom Relays In the shot put, Chamberlen placed fifth with a distance of 39’. After the meet at Lane Community College, the team went to the Cherry Blossom Relays at Willamette Univer sity in Salem. “The weather was just gross,” said Hodges. “It wasn’t conducive to re ally good performances.” According to Hodges, the most im pressive event was the distance med ley for the men’s team. Clackamas placed first with a time of 10:20.10. The men running the re lay were Bradley (three laps), Evansen (one lap), Johnson (two laps) and Armstrong (four laps). In order to win the race Clackamas had to beat all the four-year universi ties competing as well as the commu nity colleges. They did it. The men’s team also placed fifth in the 4X200 relay with a time of 1:37.64. In addition, the men also placed fifth in the 4X800 relay. Their time was 8:46.21. In the shot put, Davis placed sev enth with a distance of 39’8 Davis also placed third in the discus. His distance was 143’08”. In the long jump, Townsend placed second with a distance of 21’.5”. Schafer placed seventh with a distance of 17’2”. In the 110-yard hurdles, McIntyre placed sixth with a time of 17.24. Fisher placed first in the javelin. His distance of 189’05” was a personal record and earned him the number six spot on the all time list. Hein placed second with a distance of 180’ and Curtis placed eleventh with a distance of 144’05”. Women at Cherry Blossom Relays On the women’s side, Chamberlen placed fourth jn the shot put. Her dis tance was 37’08 Chamberlen was also fourth in the discus with a distance of 111’08”. She also took fourth place in the hammer. According to Hodges her performances were good consider ing the inclimate weather. In the javelin, Sharp placed fourth with a distance of 124’. Sharp also placed fifth in the ham mer. Her distance was 94’08”. Brown placed fourth in the high jump at 4’10”. In the pole vault, Davidson placed third at 8’6”. Her distance was a per sonal record. In the distance medley, Clackamas placed fifth with a time of 13:00.30. Clackamas was the first-place com munity college. The Western Oregon Open, the next meet, will be held this Saturday at Western Oregon State in Monmouth. “Overall the team competed really well,” said Hodges. He feels it was good for the team to compete two days in a row; it will help prepare them for the Southern Region Championship meet and the NWAACC Championships, which are both two- day events. ti Volume XXX, Issue 22 7
