The Print has featured Sue Hagen, a secretary who has worked at Clackamas for 25 years. Managing Editor Clackamas's Forensics team traveled to nationals in St. Paul, Minnesota last week and came back ranked 18th in the nation. Competing against 538 students from 81 colleges (representing all 50 states), Clackamas received third place overall and is now ranked first in the Northwest. Jesse Gnehm and Liz Kinnaman won a gold national championship award in parliamentary debate. Brian Everest won a bronze na tional championship award in dra matic speaking and a bronze in speech to entertain. Gnehm also won a bronze for his speech in extemporaneous speaking. Steve Brown won a silver cham pionship award in speech to en tertain. "As a result of all of their indi vidual efforts, we ended up win ning a third place overall bronze sweepstakes award... They did a su perb job of representing Clackamas," said Forensics Coach Kelly Brennan. Brennan said that although Clackamas's Forensics team is ranked 18th in the nation out of 196 schools(community colleges and uni versities combined), Clackamas is ranked fourth in the nation when they are compared solely against other community colleges. "The team has done extremely well. This year their goal was to beat last year's trophy record. Their goal last year was to get 100 awards — they got 217. This year, their goal was to beat that by one — they got 260... And they still have two more tournaments to go," said Brennan. Brennan said that the Forensics team appreciates the awards, but the "lifetime communication skills will last longer." In addition, Brennan stated that,"although we only had five people go to nationals, we had the rest of the team here pulling for them. It's just as much their award as anyone else's. It took a team effort to win." The event was sponsored by the college’s Customized Training and De velopment Services as a benefit for ASG Childcare Scholarships for stu dents. The concert raised about $400 dollars according to Jim Burrows, project coordinator in the department. The band members included Janet Martin and Peggy Falkenstein on key boards and vocals, Jason Heald on electric guitar and bass and Stephen Lashbrook on bass, Rick Cole playing drums. Special guest appearances were by Will Frank and Joe Hertz playing acoustic guitar. The lighting was done by Larry Van Zandt, a student at Clackamas and the sound was provided by Neuberger Shrimp Boat Sound Studios. Martin is an employee of the college and Falkenstein teaches music at the cam pus. “We want our music to speak to people about their lives,” said Martin. “We are taking them on a journey. We want to touch their hearts. Helping Everyone's Environment Live recently was able to spend a day working with "Tualatin Riverkeepers," a group dedicated to enhancing the liv ability and general environment of Tualitin. While working with Tualatin Riverkeepers, HEEL helped plant trees and remove blackberry vines that had taken over the area. . Despite run and mud, "we had a lot of fun, but made a significant im pact on the project to restore the wet lands part for the West Linn commu nity," said HEEL member Angie Williamson. Writers' Club winners announced . The Writers' Club award ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13 from 2-4 p.m. in CC127. "The audience was so responsive and apparently moved by our music." The music strongly reflected the bands philosophy. Most of the music performed was original material com posed by Martin and Falkenstein. The sense of humor in the songs “Lonely at the Bottom” and “Ode to an Ex” was very evident. PowerSurge’s music ranged from Jazz to contemporary and from humorous to sad. The band is coming out with their first CD in the next few months. If their CD is anything like the performance, it promises to be a hit.
