Spurts______________ Clackamas overthrows top-ranked Chemeketa John Thorburn Assistant Sports Editor When Lauren Mohan suited up for last Wednesday’s women’s basketball game against Chemeketa, you could tell it was a special night. For the past several weeks, Mohan has been sidelined from mononucleosis and was not ex pected to return to the Clackamas lineup until playoff time. Because of her illness, however, she was only able to participate in pregame warmups due to fatigue. The Cougars played host to top-ranked Chemeketa in what showcased two of the best teams in the northwest. After falling be hind early in the first half (10-4), Clackamas went on an incredible 25-1 run that left the Chiefs in a daze and with a sixteen point defi cit at halftime (39-23). Chemeketa came out firing in the second half and led by Kelli Johnston’s 21 points, regained the lead by three with under five min utes to play. Melissa Hollenbeck and the Cougars, however, shut the door on the Chiefs in the last minute of the game and secured a 73-70 victory. Hollenbeck’s clinching free throws in the waning moments Wednesday night added to her 18 points for the game. The Clackamas offense was well-bal anced by Clair Cox’s 18 points (11 rebounds), Robbie Nix’s 16 points (6 rebounds) and Lisa Sorenson’s 10 points (5 rebounds). “Melissa played real tough for us,” said an ecstatic Head Coach Karen Twain. “Everyone just played great!” COMgAT C Aient» Al* 1996-97 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Home 2/1 2/8 2/12 2/19 2/22 2/1 2/8 2/12 2/19 2/22 Away Umpqua Portland Mt. This past Saturday night, the Cougars continued their winning ways against a stubborn Linn- Benton squad. Clackamas started out slow and lethargic against the Roadrunners and faced a 42-34 Linn Benton lead. Led by Cox’s 19 points and Hollenbeck’s 17 (10 rebounds), the Cougars (2-2) outscored their op ponent 48-18 in the second half for an 82-60 victory. 6’ 1” Robbie Nix grabbed 13 rebounds for Clackamas. “The entire team played tremenedous,” said Twain. “The first half we were very flat and not hustling, but the second half ev- Super Bowl sleeper coming this Sunday John Thorburn Assistant Sports Editor Be sure to watch this weekend’s Super Bowl. This Sunday, the Green Bay Packers and the New England Pa triots will face off in the latest edi- tion of “naptime,” otherwise known as Super Bowl XXXI, in New Orleans. Most everyone feels the Packers will handily defeat the Pats but, before I jump on the “Cheesehead” band wagon, I must give New England their due credit. The Patriots bring to the title game a very stub born defense that has not allowed a touchdown yet in the playoffs along with strong-armed quarter back Drew Bledsoe. The flashy running of tailback Curtis Martin has often left teams scratching their heads, but he is inconsistent in his performance during the playoffs. Now let’s see what the Packers bring to the table. Two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Brett Favre will lead his team at quarterback with strong running back Edgar Bennet standing behind him. While the explosive punt-re- The Clackamas Print Wednesday, January 22,1997 / turner in Desmond Howard can ig nite a crowd, Green Bay is not plan ning on seeing the Patriot’s punter much. The defense is anchored by All-Pros Reggie White and Eu gene Robinson, who are both cer tainly capable of causing turn overs. And, of course, We must not forget the fans. Home to the most loyal and zaniest fans in the world, the Packers will have an added ad vantage as they are not only the favorite in Wis consin but all over the country. When you combine the star- studded Packers with the un tested, inconsis tent Patriots, there can only be one outcome: a very ugly game. Hey, there’s al ways the Bud Bowl. We’re trying to ease her back into the lineup because she’s missed a lot.” Clackamas plays .atPortland Community College tonight at 6 p.m. Away 2/15 Region 18 Championships, all day 1/24 Dual Central Washington University © 7 p.m. 1/25 C.W.U.
