4 Sports The Clackamas Print Wednesday, October 23,1996 Cougars rank second in NWAACC Brendon Neal Sports Editor The Cougar volleyball team roared past Pacific University (JV), Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) and Umpqua Community College last week on the way to a 8-0 league record. Clackamas leads the Southern division of Northwestern Athletic Association of Community Col leges (NWAACC) and is second overall, out of 27 teams, behind Spokane (6-0). Spokane beat Clackamas in a preseason tourna ment Clackamas beat Pacific in a nonleague match--15-5,15-2,15- 3. Shannon Segerstrom led the team with'eight kills, 39-percent hitting and 13 digs. Mattye Walsworth added 10 digs and five kills. Misi Simmons had 9 assists at 40 percent. The Cougars won three against Umpqua Thursday — 15'- MUb *- Ra-jwL * '■ 5, 15-6,15-5. Clackamas had a good serving night with a 98-per- cent serving rate and 16 blocks. Segerstrom led the team With seven kills, 19 assists and nine digs. Misti-Kae Filley had 23 digs. Jen nifer Dostert added six kills with 31- percent hitting. Stacy Iverson had eight kills and three service aces. “We played really well as a team. We focused and executed very well,” said Head Coach Kathie Woods. , Clackamas beat SWOCC -- 5-15,15-3,15-11,15-8 - includ ing a 12-0 start in the fourth game of the match. Misti-Kae Filley led the team with 16 kills and 22 digs. Segerstrom added seven kills with 47-percent hitting, 26 assists and two service aces. Segerstrom was named player of the week for her consistent overall play. She really hit it with authority, minimized her er rors,” noted Woods. “SWOCC was a different story [from Umpqua], We didn’t start out strong. We did fight hard to come back. We need to focus our discipline,” said Woods. Attendance has been low so far this season. “This [Mt. Hood] is arival. I would like to challenge the fac ulty and students to come to the matches. I want them there, and I want to hear them. We have only two home games and one of them is against a league rival, said Woods. (Photo by Brendon Neal) Sports Briefs: Clackamas hosts 14th annual Takedown Tournament Clackamas will host a double-elimination wrestling tournament on Nov. 2 in the Randall gym. The tournament is open to all competitors. The categories in clude elementary, juniors (junior high school) and open (any age). The cost is $6 per person. Registration and weigh-ins will run from 8 to 10 a.m. in R104. The wrestling will begin at 11:30 a.m. for elementary school level and noon for junior and open classes. Matches will consists of three one-minute rounds with thirty- sec ond rest between rounds. The weight classes will range from 40 to 190 pounds, plus a five-pound allowance in the open class.
