‘Mystery Science
Theater 3000’ moves Good and (heap Entertainment
to the big screen

The latest in the long line of
television to movie adaptations is
“Mystery Science Theater 3000.”
Based on the long-running
Comedy Central series of the same
name, “MST3K” is a laugh riot
from beginning to end. Retaining
the same smart-aleck zaniness that
made the series so wildly popular,
the film will delight fans of the
series and quite possibly make new
ones.
The film’s plot is exactly the
same as the television series, which
finds an ordinary guy named Mike
(played by Mike Nelson), a mild-
mannered maintenance man who
is put into a diabolical experiment
by the evil Dr. Clayton Forrester
(played by Trace Beaulieu).
After being sent into space,
Mike is forced to watch cheesy sci-
fi movies while Dr. Forrester moni
tors his mind. Mike’s only com
panions are two robots he built, the
ever-clever, hysterically funny Tom
Servo and Crow T. Robot (voiced
by creator/director Jim Mallon and
Beaulieu, respectfully), who heckle
and crack jokes throughout the
entire movie. The film is a movie
within a movie. The one in ques
tion being the 1956 turkey “This
Island Earth.” By itself, “This Is
land
Earth”
would
be
unwatchable. “MST3K” is like
watching these awful movies with
your buddies, except with better
jokes. The film is very funny, full
of sarcasm and wit. I found my
self not only chuckling, but laugh
ing out loud throughout the movie,
not just in a few spots.
Pop-culture
references
abound in “MST3K”. One hysteri
cally funny scene finds a spaceship
landing on a planet, from which
green smoke is rising. One of the
robots remarks, “It’s landing in
Tommy Chong’s backyard!”
Funny, funny stuff.
If you are a fan of the series,
you will like the film, as all of the
principal appeal of the series has
been carried over. Director/co-
writer/co-creator Jim Mallon sets
the film up well and doesn’t fool
with the formula of the series.
Wise decision, as “MST3K” fans
or “MSTies” are a hardcore bunch.
That’s not to say that you have to
be a fan of the series to enjoy the
film.
Fans take note: this may be
your last chance to see “MST3K”
in all its glory. Comedy Central has
unceremoniously canceled the se
ries, even though reruns will air
through late 1996. The film is cur
rently is limited release, showing
exclusively at the Broadway
Metroplex in Downtown Portland.
The film opens in wide release on
May 3.
