Feature New instructor True to art Paul Ulmen Staff writer After a hectic schedule teach ing many programs part time, Richard True looks forward to making a contribution to the en tire aspect of art here at CCC as a new full time instructor. True has taught part time for the last 11 years not only here at CCC, but also at PCC and PSU. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts in New Mexico, then decided he needed a change. “I wanted to come to the west to get a Master’s degree. I didn’t want to live in New Mexico any longer. . . wanted some place greener and ended up here.” True then applied at PSU and was accepted. While teaching design part time, he eventually re placed Norm Bursheim. He is looking forward to next years de sign class. They will design a mural for the music department with a musical theme “We don’t get snow here like they do there—the seasonal changes are more abrupt,” said True, who was originally from especially likes to fly fish for steel head, trout and salmon and at times float tubing, where you fish from an inner tube. True builds his own rods and tie flies to his specifications. What he likes about it is it “doesn’t have a rela tionship to work at all.” True is married and has two teenage daughters. True recently bought a place in Milwaukie that has an acre of land and a stream that runs through it. He also has a dog that he says is, “half lab and half stupid.” When he is not busy remod eling and painting his new house, he likes to bike ride and study Tai Chi about an hour a day. True feels that students that take risks and experiment with new art forms help develop a higher form of art and that is how new techniques of art have formed. He feels that what makes a good student is, “an open mind, willing to ask questions and sees education as their priority and number one use of free time. Stu dents change with the times.” photo by Paul Ulmen Richard True CCC’s new art instructor. Wyoming. “CCC is my favorite place to teach; it’s welcoming, inviting and supportive.” When not teaching, he likes to work on his art and makes large scale cement castings and hand built cement forms, which he dis plays at art shows once a year. He ‘Merchant Prince’ finally here Brendon Neal Opinion Editor “Rise of a Merchant Prince” reestablishes Raymond E. Feist’s reputation as an excellent fantasy writer. While the book does deal somewhat with the invasion and the war it focuses on the life of Rue one of the main characters from the first book. As Krondor prepares for the invasion Rue prepares to take over the town’s economic system. The book is named after him and fol lows his successes and failures as he moves from ragamuffin to mil lionaire. Eric ends up leading the as sault force along with Nakor the unmage. Their purpose is to de stroy the families of the serpents to insure that their numbers do not increase and to lower morale. are the remnants of a race ravaged by another invasion. The unfortunate part is that they have been followed by one of their invaders, a minor demon. It is the forerunner in an army looking for more souls to munch on. Eric first encounters the new enemy when they find the home of the serpents full of dead Sauur bodies. While happy to have their work done for them they continue down in hopes of learning of what could kill such hearty warriors like swatting flies. The story has the flavor of an old British novel. The economic world that Rue lives in is similar to what you read about in Britain in the last century and early in this one. This story has a very differ ent flavor from the first book in the saga, and even more so com pared to the other books by Feist. However, I enjoyed it. It has enough action to keep the tradi tional fantasy reader interested while bringing in other plots to make the more contemporary reader interested as well. I rated Feist’s book a VG for Very Good. We learn more about the ser pents and especially the foreign Sauur from beyond the rift. Rather than an invasion force they CLACKAMAS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION YOU ARE ELIGIBLE!!!!!!
