Inglis teaches students who are working on their GEDs (Gen eral Educational Development) and high school equivalency cer tificates. As an Alternative Programs Instructor, Inglis spends most of her day at the Targeted Learning Center teaching students who are more comfortable in a non-tradi- tional classroom environment. Inglis first received a degree in art from Oregon State Univer sity, and decided that it wouldn’t support her. She then went back to school and received a degree in education. Since receiving her degree, she has taught “Fundamentals of Communication” At OSU, Tarrant Community College in Texas and University of North Texas. “Oregon is a lot different than Texas,” Inglis said. “Texas is the ‘buckle of Bible belt’...they have a much stronger emphasis on religion.” Besides teaching as an Al Linda Barr Batdorf Staff Writer photo by Josh Kehler New Alternative Programs Instructor, Brenda Inglis ternative Programs Instructor at CCC, she has also taught public speaking, adult literacy, GED preparation and basic skills. “Clackamas takes very good care of their staff,” she said. “On the whole, they have more to give to the students. I find it really ex OS citing to try and find new ways to teach...” Inglis said she sometimes deals with students who don’t want tb be there, but that most stu dents want to be in class and that attitude is reflected by those stu dents who come to class everyday. If you let someone go ahead of you in traffic does it irritate you when they don’t acknowl edge your kindness with that Or egonian “thank-you” wave? Or are you one of the offenders who plow right in, as if that spot in traffic has your name on it, with out so much as a politely raised digit to thank the person who took pity on you and let you ahead of them? If you are, you are a source of heavy traffic irritation to countless travelers on the high ways and byways of life. But you woudn’t be one of those imma ture poops whose only concern in life is “ME”, would you? Na- a-ah. Fact is, if you are intelli gent enough to read this, you are also intelligent enough to real ize that it takes much less effort to thank someone than it does to do that rude traffic thing. You’ve seen it. Instead of offering a smile or a wave of thanks, the dweeb kind of cocks his or her selfish little head, shrugs, sneers and looks as if he or she is at tempting to sniff their front teeth. Some of us will celebrate Thanksgiving next week. I have been thinking about this holiday, and what it means. It means a lot of money for grocery stores and turkey farms. It means a lot of us will pig out and somehow gain ten pounds from eating just one meal. It means that some families will get together, and it means that some people will feel lonely on Big Meal Thursday because no one invited them to eat a hefty meal consisting of cranberries, huge pies made with squash and a big bird crammed with bread and sage. So what is this holiday, any way? Are we thankful on Thanksgiving anymore? Has the act of being kind and thankful become passe? Or are an awful lot of us just grow ing up with some kind of a rude gene-deal going? Maybe television is to blame. Have you watched much prime and not-so-prime T.V. lately? I make it a point to keep television viewing to a mini mum, but I was ill last week and decided to watch a few hours of mindless video-litter. What’s so absurd about this is the fact that it almost seemed as if this attitude is trying to be foisted off on the viewing pub- "7 Similarly, have you heard that song that goes something like, “You gotta be cool, you gotta be hard, you gotta be wiser, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger...” My question is why? Why are so many people busy being tougher-than the other? What is the point? And as if that were not enough, the song goes on to say, “Love will save the day... Alright Einstein, how? How is love going to save any day when one is busy being tough, hard and cool? Let’s just imagine for a second that the song goes like this,’’You gotta be kind, you gotta give back, you gotta be thankful, because no body owes you a plug nickle — and then love will save the day, you ungrateful hoser.” Hmmm — maybe not. That doesn’t sound so benevolent, ei ther. So if you are tempted to feel sorry for yourself on this turkey day because no one invited you to dinner, go get some frozen pizza or a platter of haddock, or something and invite someone over to your place for a meal. Why not decide that a visit to Mom’s this year won’t consist of punching in on a time clock, conking out in front of the t.v. or a fast dart out of the door be fore our plates cool off? As corny as it sounds, why don’t we just take a second, look around the table this year and tell each person something about them that we are thankful for? Who knows — we just might get invited back. Oh, by the way, if that was you in the little red sedan over by Town Center, thanks for try ing to let me in to that big line of traffic, but I was trying to park. « i ED SPEARS Barber Shop 706 Holmes Ln.
