The Clackamas Print Page 2 Wednesday, Nov. 16,1994 SPORTS/OPINIONS With two strikes anti two out, football is the only show in town by Jason Hunter Sports Editor With Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League in the can, football has stole the spotlight with a season of sur prises, disappointments and records in the NFL. The AFC East is going to come down to the wire, with all Eve teams in the hunt. Odds are Miami will win the division, but they will get a good showing from the Bills. The Patriots are a much improved team from last year. If they can find a running game to take some of the pressure off Drew Bledsoe, they will find themselves in playoff territory. The India napolis Colts will be in the play off hunt as well, with rookie run ning back Marshall Faulk lead ing in rushing and Jim Harbaugh leading in passing. They just need to tighten up their defense, which is ranked 10th in the AFC. The New York Jets will make some commotion in the east, but I don’t think it will be enough. Johnny Johnson has carried the team so far with 592 rushiiig yards, but they need to keep Boomer Esiason on his feet. In the AFC East, the Miami Dolphins have taken command with a 6-2 record. Dan Marino has come back from last season’s season-ending injury and is cur- Where are all the fans? By Jesse Sowa Staff Writer The Clackamas Volleyball team has put together a late sec ond-half rally in order to earn a spot in the NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Commu nity Colleges) tournament. We have students at the col lege that enjoy watching sports who are hanging out at the mall, watching re-runs of their favorite “Roseanne” episode or cruising 82nd Avenue on Wednesday nights. Does anyone else see something wrong with this? Last year, the men’s basket ball team here at the college had a sensational year. They were un stoppable in conference play and went on to win the NWAACC Tournament. Yet the team got little or no support from the stu dent body. The people at this college need to stop for a minute and fig ure out what’s going on around them. I could go on and on about how sports programs at Clackamas Community College are not supported by the staff and students here. But why should I write about this when people would rather go to the movies than watch a successful college team do what they do best - suc ceed. It isn’t like this is the first year that Clackamas has had win ning sports teams. Clackamas has long been a place where the ath letes take great pride in being the best. Take a look at all the trophies outside the gym in Randall Hall or walk into Cross Country and Track Coach Mike Hodges’ office. Hodges’ office is filled with plaques, trophies and pictures of success in the teams he leads. Community college teams that put fans in the bleachers should be the ones that have com mitted, accomplished programs. We have these kind of programs here at Clackamas. At Mt. Hood Community College, home volleyball matches draw between one hundred and two hundred people, most of those being students. At Chemeketa Community College, a men’s bas ketball home game packs the gymnasium with a wild, enthusi astic crowd. With a student body enroll ment of 10,000 to 13,000 here at Clackamas, our sports programs should be a major focus of student gatherings. Come to a volleyball match, basketball game or wrestling event in the near future. Come see what Clackamas is all about. Bemie Parmalee has come in and done an outstanding job at running back with 496 yards on the ground. Irving Fryar has turned 33 receptions for 647, yards while Keith Byars has 47 catches for 409. If the team stays healthy, look for the Dolphins to dominate the AFC. It has been overlooked that the Buffalo Bills have been the second-best team in the NFL for four straight years, and are threat ening to repeat again as AFC champs. The Bills are currently 5-3 and are trailing the Dolphins by a game. Jim Kelly and Andre Reed have connected 45 times for 692 yards, while Thurman Tho mas has picked up 579 yards on 144 carries. Bruce Smith got to the quarterback eight times and, in doing so, leads the AFC in sacks. Steve Christie is the NFL’s most accurate kicker. His three field goals against the Chiefs gave him 100 in his career, which makes him 100/124 (80.65 %). This season he has made 19/19 extra points and is perfect with 15 field goals in 15 attempts.
