Wednesday, February 23,1994 T^^^ckamas Print Pg. 5 Feature Honor society focuses on linking college, community by Michele Myers The Print Editorial Staff Clackamas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, AlphaXiZeta,is busy this year. Phi Theta Kappa is the National Honor Society for two- year colleges. This club, which any student with a 3.5 GPA or better can join, focuses on four hallmarks that maintain a com mitment to excellence: Scholar ship, Leadership, Fellowship and Service. These hallmarks help the society members to focus their scholastic and personal achieve ments through programs. According to Advisor Don Hartsock, to be eligible for membership, a student must be currently enrolled at Clackamas, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours of degree work, adhere to the school conduct code and pos sess recognized qualities of citi zenship, as demonstrated by a let ter of recommendation from a fac ulty member. A one-time membership fee is required when the member is inducted. These funds are then used to help provide for the educa tional and cultural programs and some scholarships. The first hallmark, Scholarship, promotes the devel opment of scholarship through a comprehensive program topic which all Phi Theta Kappas use. This year’s topic, “Our Complex World: Balancing Unity and Di versity,” is used in all the conven tions, discussionsand conferences. Field experts are often asked to speak on the current topic at con ventions. Service, the second hall mark, is constantly strived for through Phi Theta Kappa. The Clackamas chapter has partici pated in many programs to help the community. "The programs worked on are timely, such as last year the chapter worked on voter registra tion,” Hartsock said. This year, Alpha Xi Zeta is focusing its attention on linking the community and the college closer together. "One project will have AlphaXi Zeta volunteers working as monitors and guides for the upcoming Skills Day when high school students will be coming to Clackamas," Hartsock. "On March 8, members will be working down at Oregon Public Broadcasting answering phones for the OPB fund-raiser," Hartsock said. Other local events in which Alpha Xi Zeta have partici pated include singing Christmas carols at retirement homes and manymembers of Phi Theta Kappa volunteerfor individual programs such as tutoring and helping at women’s shelters. Leadership, the third hallmark, is shown in many ways. "Phi Theta Kappa will be sponsoring aleadershipclass next semester on Tuesdays and Thurs days. This will be a three credit class to develop leadership skills through classical literature and cultural examples. This will be a more academically-orientated class rather than business leader ship," Hartsock explained. Alpha Xi Zeta will also be sponsoring the regional con vention for the Northwest chapter of Phi Theta Kappa in May at the Portland Holiday Inn. There, Al pha Xi Zeta will be introducing next year’s scholar topic: “Sci ence, Humanity and Technology: Shaping a New Creation.” Fellowship, the last hall mark, means that the members have a commitment to each other as well as to the Society and share the idea of Phi Theta Kappa. Phi Theta Kappa will be involved in different programs throughout the rest of the year. Fans 'nip out' to Sweaty's new sound by Christopher Haberman The Print Staff The nights of day-glow and Power T’s have past, and funk is just something they play when . theyrun out of other songs. Sweaty Nipples is not the same band they used to be. They havesteppedup the ladder of progression and ad vanced out of Portland, dredging on tour along with the Beastie Boys, running on high, making videos and plainly entertaining the masses. Sweaty isn’t just for breakfast anymore. As lunch came upon the land, everyone watched in awe, waiting for the crew to enter, pis tol-fists in hand. “Hi I’m Davey, and I’m a Sagittarius,” said Davey Nipples, guitarist The crew said they liked to have fun and do “other tilings” with the opposite sex. As soon as they entered the stage, everyone rushed, never standing still until they left the building. Elvis would have stood up and danced a funny dance, and Wolfman Jack and Herve’ Villechaize would have tangoed under the bright winter moon; If only they would have known that tonight was a night that people wouldn’t forget. A night that would ring in their little red heads until aspirin put them to sleep. “This is Demon Juice, the first song on our new EP,” said Sweaty, mocking the infamous Beastie Boys, "...and up there is Mike D,” pointing to the bar. I never saw Mike D, but “Demon Juice,” a hardcore release truly representing the new Sweaty sound, threw around the crowd, and bled the cotton from my ears. “And now Glenn Danzig, performing Mother,” the red- haired demon said, as Danzig's look-alike/twin brother/close cousin entered, muscle bound with sweet lungs, imitating the old rocker. After their sets were over they took an intermission, daring to return with an acoustic perfor mance. And return they did with such unplugged passion that small children tears ran down my tender face, releasing such emotion that I had to hug myself with both my bare hands. “Touch my Cum,” Sweaty’s best song was performed and the crowd began to weep, and join me in my unbridled happi ness. Pleasure Elite and Fore head opened this monumental show. Forehead was the same. “Hi we’re Forehead.” Dugga- dugga-dugga chords and puberty stricken voices followed, but they play fastand loud and don’tbother anyone. Pleasure Elite played instead of Drunk At Abi’s, who were supposed to play but broke up. (I take this time to salute J.R. and Drunk At Abi’s who have entertained many over the years. Thank you andplease come again.) Pleasure Elite was pretty hardcore and very exciting. The lead singer looked like punk demi-god, hardcore demon G.G. Allin, so that really made me happy. They sounded well, and had a long set, a true warm-up for the men of paradise, the men with sweat on their nipples. The entire show was very good, but I really missed the usual stage props and gimmicks usually acquainted with a Sweaty show, like costumes and tongue tricks. But they did pass around OLD ROPE a good friend from long ago, that plots to take down the current tobacco industry and whip its buttocks until theyrun red. Sweaty was a step-father for some and a fat grandmother for others, but mostly they were a band that played some heavy stuff to a heavy crowd. PIT RATING: (8 AND TWO THIRDS+) Circle pits waved their weary arms around sweaty veterans and Sid and Nancy polkaed around. Pogo people closed their mouths while blood showered them staining blonde afros coated with hairspray. Big headed jerks with their closed fists and empty heads were at a pretty fair level. Body shaved, crazed, lunatic prison convicts with home made tattoos of eagles were just about everywhere my vision ex tended. The floor got wet and a teddy-bear exploded and the pit went on, raging and flying around, while patrons pranced in wet cot ton. As always body fluids were exchanged and we all had sweaty nipples. Sweaty currently has a new video out on “Bohemia Afterdark,” which I’m sure is MTV bound, and their new record is out, which includes all their newstuff. Hopefully they will stay low, and be relocated under the witness protection program for crimes against the Main Man, and maybe they will come around again, sweatier, meaner and more nipply.
