By Greg Tully Staff Writer The Clackamas track team competed in the Oregon Indoor at Memorial Coliseum last Saturday, with some impressive performances by the 40 CCC athletes involved. At the nighttime stage of the event, the Cougar Club took part in the 4x300 meter relay and took third place in a time of 2:26.07. The team, consisting of Juha Tuom- inen, Scott Willhite, Darwin Ar nold and Dwayne Arnold lost only to the University of Oregon and Central Washington University. “It was really an honor just to be invited to a nighttime event,” Coach Mike Hodges said. “I thought those guys did a great job finishing third. At the daytime, open section of the event, many Clackamas ath letes came up with strong perform ances. In the long jump, Kyle Riggs jumped 22' for fourth place, while Dean Jolley jumped 21’8 1/4", good for sixth place. Both represented the Cougar Club. For the women, Alicia Smith, representing the col lege, jumped 15' 7", an improve ment of 5 inches over her previous performance. Many of the athletes competed for the Cougar Club, while others competed for Clackamas. “Some people are ineligible, at this point, to compete for the college,” Hodges said. “There’s a variety of reasons why we had to put people in for the Cougar Club.” Heidi Spillum, running for CCC, won the women’s 1000 with a time of 2:47.1. In the men’s 1000 yard race, Tim Marshall was third for the Cougar Club with a time of 2:24.2, followed by fourth place finisher Robert Adriance in 2:26.4. Ilene Penas finished fourth in the women’s shot put with a dis tance of 38’ 111/4". LaChelle Pierce was eighth, at 34’7", an improve ment of four feet over her last per formance. Both competed for CCC. In the women’s 1500, Tara Loiodici, running for the Cougar Club, finished fifth with a time of 5:11.4. Stephanie Rosen was sev enth in 5:15.4 for the college. Ryan Schenk was ninth in the pole vault, clearing 14’6". Wayne Holloway cleared 13’6", Chris Hale 13' and Mike Brown 12’6". All but Holloway were competing for CCC. Many of the CCC athletes fin ished high in their heats or set per sonal bests. Darwin Arnold was second in his heat for the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 7.85 seconds. Dwayne Arnold was 5th in his, in 7.8. In the 400, Scott Willhite and Pam Raade each finished second in their respective heats. Willhite finished in 51.2 seconds, while Raade finished in one minute even. Both competed for the school. Steve Edwards, jumping for the school, high-jumped 6’2". Jenny Gay triple-jumped 31’3 1/4", also for the school. In the men’s 3000, Billy Borkus ran a 9:04.3; Gene Branderhorst, a 9:08.8; Oscar Bauman, a 9:18.0; Randy Faddis, a 9:245; and Nathan Matlock, a 9:32.3. All ran for the college. Borkus and Faddis each ran a personal record. In the 55 meter dash, Tuom- inen finished fourth in his heat in 6.39 seconds, Rick Wheeler was third in his at 6.41. Nancy Nelson was 4th in hers with a 7.52 and Alicia Smith got an 8th place in 7.61. All but Tuominen ran for the college. The meet included the Univer sity of Oregon, University of Wash ington, and many other large four- year schools. “Overall, the team performed really well,” Hodges said. “Our athletes are really improving.” The team’s next meet will be the Vandal Indoor in Moscow, ID on Feb. 15. photo by Kyle Moe A pole vault competitor clears his jump during the Oregon Indoor.
