Lady Cougars lose by 1 in OT by Scott Morris Staff Writer The Mount Hood CC Saints used a 12 point halftime lead to hold off a second half rally by the Lady Cougars and win 76-75 in overtime at MHCC Wednesday night. “We just were not ready to play at the start of the game,” said Coach Spaulding. “We beat our selves.” The Lady Cougars once again had strong performances from Launa Meek in a game that could have gone either way. Muck, who according to Coach Spaulding “is playing great at both ends of the court,” finished with 22 points while shooting 62 per cent from the floor and also grabbed nine rebounds. Topham ,who played her best all-around game to date as a Lady Cougar, finished with 17 points, 19 rebounds, and 7 steals. Meek also played a solid game and finished with 22 points for the PROFILE Jenny Topham Wrestling Notes Editor's Note: Due to Monday's holiday, last weekend's results were unavailable for press. Favorite Basketball player: Michael Jordan If you could be anything in the world (non-human), what would you be? A basketball DeVry should drop the "D" by Kevin Shields StaffWriter DeVry Institute, an Atlanta based computer college that’s a member of NAIA Division II, has been required by SenateBill90210 to remove the “D” from their title as it has become apparent they play no“d”efense. Therefore, from now on, they will be referred to as EVry, as in "every" team wants to sched ule them for a non-conference tune- up. Are you listening, Georgetown? That’s the story I expected to read after learning that the Troy State Trojans pulled out a real squeaker over the DeVry Hoyas 258-141 in a college basketball game last Sunday. Yes, 258-141, which marks the first time any NCAA team has eclipsed the 200-point barrier. In a related news story, the friction from the scorekeeper’s pencil started a small fire; no inju ries were reported. Virtually every scoring record imaginable was broken. Total points by a team, 258; the old record was 187; field goals made, 102; old record, 79; 3-point field goals made, 51, shattering the previous record of25;pointsinonehalf, 135,which broke Troy State’s 1991 record of 103; and the number of large gro cery bags (the perfect size to cover a head) stolen from a local 7-11 near the DeVry campus in prepara tion for their next home game. The numbers keep going and going and going. This poses the question, did DeVry have any resemblance of a defense? I think the rock-n-roll grandma on the Budweiser com mercial can provide you with this answer. Even Manute "The Hu man Flyswatter" Bol of the 76ers might have even been able to break into double figures against such a tenacious defense that committed six fouls the entire game (Troy State had one). The 258 points Troy State scored works out to more than six points a minute. To compare this feat to something more relevant right here at Clackamas, lets con vert points into money,»© P=$ and one minute into-a $30 dollar text-1 book so M= a booK For every $30 textbook (M) you return at the end ’ of the term you get $6 (P). Actu ally, I don’t know how this relates but I thought it would be a good time to complain about the book refund policy. Back to the game. I’m curious what the coach for DeVry Com puter Institute used as a halftime talk. “We’re only down 123-53; if« the zebras would quit homering us \ we’d be right there. You look like you’ve got an Image Writer 2000 - strapped to your legs. .Npipore. Nintendo Gameboys allowed on' the court until you can prove you deserve it. Come on Erkel, re move that pocket protector, you; should know the plays by now.” What’s the record for the number of clipboards broken over players’ heads during a halftime anyway? I guess I could call the Indiana Athletic Director for the current record. “Is coach Knight in?” The second half started with a familiar chant from the Troy State crowd toward the DeVry players. “Typewriters rule, typewrit ers rule.” Ouch, have they no mercy? The DeVry fans retaliated with: “We got Microsoft Word, yes we do, we got Microsoft Word, so font you.” The game looked like it would go into overtime until with 7:57 remaining in the second half, Troy State broke the 200 point barrier. The only suspense that remained was the possibility that DeVry would win back their Nintendo pri vileges. Memo to Coach Kiser: Please schedule DeVry next season as it would be good publicity for the college. In turn, DeVry has prom ised a computer for every ten shots your team misses on purpose.
