SPORTS THE CLACKAMAS PRINT May 23,1990 Page Cougars sweep South Puget, next stop NWAACC tournament by Staci Beard Sports Editor Preparations are in high gear for the women’s softball team going into the NWAACC Champion ship Tournament in Spokane on May 25 and 26. The Cougars finished off the season by sweeping their last double headers against South Puget Sound Community College to finish sec ond in the Southern Division with a 13-7 record. The first game saw Heather McCorkle pitch a five hitter with no walks as the Cougars shut out SPSCC6-0. The offense carried a lot of consistency as both Kristi Northcutt and Lisa Williamson went 2-3. Out of her four appear ances at the plate Julie Troutner picked up three hits. Molly Bremmer also had a strong day going 2-4. The Cougars picked up a to- tal of 12 base hits against a pitcher that Coach Paul Fiskum feels will get votes as MVP of the league. In the second game the bats were quieter but behind Landa Gross’ one hit shutout they didn’t need any for a 2-0 victory. Defensively everything came together for the last game. “Everything we tried defen sively worked. KC. Jones picked two off first. Williamson robbed two base hits from them. Every- one who tried to steal we got,” explained Fiskum. Clackamas’ first match up in the tournament will be a rematch with Skagit Valley who the Cou gars defeated in the Champion ship match. Earlier this season in a crossover tournament Clacka mas lost to them in nine innings 4- 6, “They are one of the hottes teams in the Northwest. The started the season at 5-7 then sha out to a 12-8 by winning seven ou of the next eight in route toa fins 14-10record. Wedidn’t getaeas draw, but if we play as well defen sivelyas wedidon Wednesday,w will be okay,” stated Fiskum.
