NEWS THE CLACKAMAS PRINT Johnson plans June retirement by Mark A. Bonelli Editor-in-Chief Public Safety Chief Stan Johnson announced his retire ment in a letter of resignation recently to Dean of College Serv ices Gary Dirrim. Johnson, who has been Pub lic Safety Chief since 1974, came to Clackamas Community Col lege after serving in the Army as a member of the Military Police. He retired from the Army in 1973 as a Lt Col. Johnson then brought his experience in security and law to Clackamas to head security at the campus. Johnson has headed the post of Chief of Public Service for the last 15 years, but will step down from his post June 30 of this year. Johnson, who just decided on his retirement this past December, cites a need to do other things as the main reason for his retire ment. “I’m approaching the magic age of 62,” said Johnson. “It’s time to go fishing, play with my grand kids, and travel,” said Johnson. Some of his travel plans include traveling to New York to visit relatives. Since coming to Clackamas, some changes that Johnson has seen includes a name change. When Johnson first started, the public safety officers were known as the campus security officers. “We used to be called secu rity, but that changed in 1983 or ’84,” said Johnson. Some other changes that Johnson has been involved in include the bay sta tion, and the use of radios for this time, or if Johnson’s position will be filled as CCC is currently in a “reorganization period.” “We don’t really know what’s happening right now, we expect that something will happen in May,” said Public Safety Secre tary Janis Rosenlof. “We’re going to miss him. He was well liked, and everyone knew him... We’re definitely going to miss him.” Page The Home Orchard Society, located on the campus of CCC, is offering three pomology-educa tion short courses on trees and friuts. The Home Orchard Society is an educational organization which serves to "provide people with the practical knowledge and ability to grow fruit-bearing trees." Paul Xanthall has served as society president and site man ager for four years. He explains that the HOS arboretum is open to the public from April through November on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. It is also open on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Also known as the "North west’s Fruit and Edible Land- scape Technology Center," the Orchard Society’s first short course begins Saturday, May 12, entitled, "Fruit Tree and Grape Pruning Disease and Pest Con- troL" The one-day course is slated from 1-3 p.m. The second short course, "Basic Budding I," is scheduled for Sunday, July 8, from 1-3 p.m. The second phase of the ad vanced budding and grafting short course will be held on August 4 arid August 18, both Saturdays. AU courses cost $3 for Home Orchard Society members and $5 for non-members. For more information, the public is asked to call 655-1939 or write P.O. Box 776, Clacka mas, 97015.
