FEATURE THE CLACKAMAS PRINT December 6,1989 Page 6 Horticulture instructor receives award Chase goes on vacation here, which means there is more of an interest and I have more peers.” Howley enjoys her career because she has the opportunity to “help people make better deci sions about the plants they grow and how they grow them.” Howley also appreciates the nursery industry in Oregon be cause it is the one thing that the state actually benefits from. “Ninety-two percent of the productivity takes place in the state,” said Howley. “The plants are grown and sold in Oregon, which means local people are being paid to grow them.” Clackamas has a “good repu tation in horticulture,” and ac cording to Howley this is why the Master Gardeners Association asked her to teach for them. Howley began her involve ment with the Master Gardeners four years ago instructing insect and house plant care in different areas for 10 weeks. Howley has also done other services for the Master Gardeners, and has won the highest award for outstanding service. Howley encourages people to get involved in horticulture if they are interested. She expressed the “wonderful mix of people involved” and there is “great job placement.” “There are about five jobs available for every student en rolled,” Howley said. Photo by Scott Johnson by Margy Lynch Staff Writer Elizabeth Howley, horticul ture instructor at Clackamas, has recently received the “Green Thumb” award from the Master Gardeners Association. The Master Gardeners Asso ciation is an organization that instructs plant care and provides various services in the nursery area, and the “Green Thumb” award is thé Highest award given by the Master Gardeners Association. Howley has been teaching at Clackamas for seven years. She worked at the Harvard University Arnard Arboretum before com worked at the Britannic Gardens in Massachusetts. At the Arnard Arboretum, Howley worked in the nurseiy caring for trees and shrubs while also studying them. “I have always been interested in plants,” said Howley. “My first career choice was horticulture, but I was also interested in arborcul ture (the study of trees).” Howley moved to Oregon eight years ago. The size of the nursery industry is what attracted her to Oregon. “Oregon is the third largest state in terms of horticulture,” said Howley. “Oregon grows 60 percent of this country’s trees.
