Cross Country team wins Co-Ed Championship by Amber Cordry Staff Writer Once again Clackamas .Com munity College Cross Country teams came back holding their heads high with trophies and honors to show for their hard work Last Friday the CCC harriers competed in the Northwest Re gional meet. Not unlike the other meets, CCC had a very successful finish against the strongest teams in their conference. Together, the men and women took the Combined Champion ship for the first time in the his tory of CCC. The men and women scored 106, Trailing CCC was Bellevue Community College with 158, Spokane Community College with 180, and Clark Community College with 203. “Together they had a really outstanding season,” commented Coach Hodges, who also shared the "Coach of the Year" title for the region with the coach at High- line College. The men came into the meet with their goals set at a first place finish. They came ever so close to their goal, but couldn’t quite at tain it, as Highline edged them out by one point to take first place. Highline scored 37 while CCC scored 38. Following was Lane Community College with 79, Spokane Community College with Buse place 18th with27.39; Shaun Fergerson placed 21st with 27.48, and Marc Paulsen placed 37th witdh 29.17. In their own limelight, the women’s team achieved success also. As a team, they placed third with 68 points. Their victories were over Spokane College with 75 points and Green River and Mt. Hood Community Colleges who both finished incomplete. Angie Wright was the quali fier for all NWACC for the women. She finished fourth overall with 19.57 minutes for their 5 kilome ter run. Other women who placed were Sonja Hult, 14th, with 21.29; Kim Wright, 19th, with 21.55; Alison Munsen, 21st, with 22.17; Lara Riley, 22nd, with 22.42; Sunshine Guzman, 23rd, with 22.57; and Siobhan Kennedy, 25th, with 23.10 minutes. Coach Hodges was very pleased with the success of the teams. “The men were one point away from the championship against the three year defending champions who had six sopho mores on their team.” “We are looking forward to a successful season next year. We have five returning women and six returning men,” stated Hodges on his outlook for the upcoming season. SWOCC match to decide Cougars1 fate Congratulations!!! The Clackamas Print 105, Bellevue Community College with 132, Clark Community Col lege with 148, and Linn Benton Community College with 186 points. Skaggit Valley, Green River, and Mt Hood Community Colleges all finished incomplete. Individual Champion for the men was swept away by Tim Beardall who had a time of 26.10 for the 8 kilometer run. Other men that qualified for the all NWACC from CCC were Gene Branderhorst,. fifth place, with 26.44; Nick Barger, sixth place, with 26.51; and Dusty Moore, cigth place, with 27.00 minutes. Other team members for the men placed successfully also. Kevin by Staci Beard Sports Editor Despite two losses suffered this week, the women’s volleyball team is still in place to go the the NWAACC tournament. The first loss was against Chemeketa 15-8,15-8,15-5. “It was a poor match with a loss of intensity. Instead of going to play, we went to watch,” stated Coach Kathie Woods. Saturday’s contest against SWOCC was also another one for the loss column, but the Cougars had a stronger performance and finished 15-13,15-8,15-11. Casie Harker again led in the “kills” department with 12 and added 18 “digs." Judi Bennett had another strong performance with 7 “kills," 15 “digs” and 4 solo blocks. Contributing 6 solo blocks was Chris Nylen. Also having a good night was Dawn Cusick who pitched in with 16 assists. Last week’s action finished the Cougars’ season which saw them in third place with a 5-7 league record. Finishing tied for second with 9-3 records was Chemeketa and SWOCC. Mt. Hood went through the season with 12 wins and no losses. With their finish in league, the Cougars will now be in a play off game to see who will be the third team to go into the NWAACC tournament. Monday night Chemekata beat SWOCC. This means that Clackamas will now face SWOCC. The winner of this match will be the third place fin isher in the league. The loser will see their season come to an end. Three members of the team were noticed for their outstand ing play over the season. Taking first team all-league honors for the second year in a row is Harker. Making the list for honorable mention are Bennett and Cusick.
