SPORTS THE CLACKAMAS PRINT November 1,1989 Page 4 Men's and women's cross country teams take state by Amber Cordry Staff Writer Clackamas Community College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams, and their coach Mike Hodges, ran away from the state meet with all the top awards. Last Saturday the CCC harriers traveled to Eugene for the State Championships. Not unlike many other meets, they came back with all first place awards. Men’s cross country prevailed with a score of 21. Trailing after them was Lane Community College with 49, Clark Community College, 75, and last place was Linn-Benton Community College with a score of 98. Mt. Hood, Southwestern Oregon, and Umpqua Community Colleges all finished incomplete. Finishing on top was Tim Beardall with 26.46 minutes for 8 kilometers. Following Beardall was third place Gene Branderhorst with 27.04, fourth place Shaun Fergeson with 2729, fifth place Dusty Moore with 27.38, eighth place Nick Barger with 27.52, twclveth place Kevin Buse with 28.13, thirteenth place Mike Tierney with 28.18 and nineteenth place Marc Paulson with 29.31. Hodges commented that he was especially pleased with Tim Beardall. “He made a strong move at the third mile to take a commanding lead.” He was also pleased with Shaun Fergeson who had “his highest finish of the year.” “This is the best team we’ve had since 1986, possibly the best ever. We’ll know after the Northwest Regionals,” commented Hodges. Women’s Cross Country took first place with 26 points. Following CCC was Clark Community College with 29 points. Mt. Hood, Linn-Benton, and Southwestern Oregon Community Colleges all finished incomplete. Angie Wright took first place overall with a time of 20.37 minutes for 5 kilometers. Other team members placing were sixth place Sonja Hult with 21.45, eighth place Kim Wright with 22.39, ninth place Alison Monson with 23.01, tenth place Sunshine Guzman with 23.12, and thirteenth place Siouhon Kennedy with 24.17. “Angie and Sonja both ran strong at State. The improvementof Sunshine was the key to the Championship, however. She was our seventh place runner and now she is fifth,’ possibly even fourth,” declared Hodges who was very pleased with the performance of the women. Men’s and Women’s combined Cross Country also took first place with a scoreof47. Their victory was over Clark Community College who scored 104. Cross Country is now in preparation for the Northwest regionals coming up on Nov. 10. All the men and women have qualified to race. Hodges hopes that the men will take first place at regionals. Women, he feels, will come in second with the right attitude and preparation. He is confident that they have a strong chance. Due to outstanding performances of his teams, coach Mike Hodges was awarded Coach of the Year for Men’s and Women’s Cross Country. Spikers finish winning week with 2nd place finish in tournament by Staci Beard Sports Editor As the road to the play-offs winds down, the women’s volley ball team is getting stronger with each step. They won a four game match against Linn-Benton 15-4,16-14, 12-15,15-12. The win showed a strong team effort with many players putting in top performances. Casie Harker again lead both the Cougars and Linn-Benton in “kills,” and “digs” with 20 and 22. Harker also threw in 2 service “aces” and 1 solo block. Tara White contributed to the offense with 16 ‘‘kills’1 other own. Helping the spikers have a good day was setter and team captain Dawn Cusick who had 32 assists. Also having strong perform ances were Jill Schnell with 19 “digs;” Judi Bennett had 6 solo blocks and 2 service “aces”; Chris Nylen also chipped in with 5 solo blocks and 1 service “ace.” Bennett and Nylen accounted for all the solo blocks while Linn- Benton couldn’t manage any. The Cougars also showed steady play at the service line going 101 in 110 attempts. “We had a much improved performance against them than in our previous meeting. It was just a great team effort with a lot of people contributing,” stated Coach Kathie Woods. Clackamas continued their strong performance with a second place finish at the Blue Mountain Invitational. In pool play they defeated Treasure Valley 17-15, 15-5 and Blue Mountain 15-11,16-14. They suffered their first loss to North Idaho 15-17, 13-15. They came back to defeat Walla Walla 15-9, 15-11. With their success in pool play, they were just able to play in the Championship match where they were faced North Idaho again. They again played a tough match but were on the wrong end of the score 5-15,13-15,13-15. “It was another good team effort. We played tough the whole game, but could not quite pull it out to win,” explained Woods. They were also without Cusick for the tournament due to illness. Tisha Chevron filled in for the setter. The Cougars had some goals for the second half of their season. “After the first half of the season we held a meeting and got our goals sorted out. We wanted to start out fresh and put the past behind us. We have become a more together team with more inten sity,” emphasized Woods. One of their goals is to get a into a position to go to the state tournament. Asof nowtheyare in fourth place with 4-5 league rec- ord. The next match is at Cheme- keta tonight at 7 p.m. Setter Dawn Cusick sets up the bail to an outside hitter. Photo by Dawn Kuehl CLASSIFIEDS MISC.
