Wrestlers win season opener Monday, Nov. 28, marked the beginning of the competitive wrestling season for the Clackamas Community College grapplers. The Cougars emerged victorious against the University of Oregon's Junior Varsity squad with a 25-16 score. According to assistant coach Rich Taylor, the team performed quite well in the match, especially since some members of the squad have only been able to attend practice for two weeks due to the fact that they were on the football team. Jerry York, formerly of South Albany High School, and Wayne Snoderly, a graduate of Wilson High, were to be commended as they both "did outstanding jobs," according to Taylor. "They were very aggressive and the two falls they made were the big dif ference in the match." York and Snoderly made their pins when Clackamas was trail ing 10-11. In the four preliminary matches the University of Oregon Ducks won three. The scores of those matches were: Brian Lind say, UO, 8;Gary Hein, CC, 7: Jim Dickinson, UO, 6; Rocky Schneider, CC, 1: Bill Davies, CC pinned by Steve Starsinski, UO. In his first match ever, Mike Vögele started off his wrestling career grabbing a win for CCC by defeating UO's Bob Ricci 3-0. In the 1181b. division CC's Paul Schwehn lost to Curt Nixon, UO 8-22. In the 128 lb. division Glenn Hartman, formerly of Camas, WA., downed UO's Larry Marshall 7-6. In the 134 lb. division UO's Reynold Capps defeated Clackamas' Ron Ziegle 8-0. Former Gladstone star Don Zellnertrom- ped the Duck's Dave Loft 15-5 in the 142 lb. division. CC's Mike Brewton, out of Rex Putnam High School and wrestling at 150 lbs. beat Ty Steiner 11-8. Ron Geister lost a close one in the 158 lb. division to UO's Shane Walter 4-5. Wayne Snoderly won by a fall over Randy Winter in the first round after 1:03. Clackamas' Jerry York ended his battle after only 34 seconds by pinning UO's Kim Beyers. In the 190 lb. division Joe Davies, CC, downed Don Browne 12-6, and heavyweight Kim Roehl lost to Oregon's Mel Peterson 10-26. In all, the Cougars looked impressive in what was probably one of this season's toughest meets. Next the CCC grapplers will travel to Olympia, WA., to compete in a tournament at Grey's Harbor College. It should be noted that this year's wrest ling squad consists of two teams which work on a rotating system. It won't be first and second varsity squads as in previous years because of CCC's largest wrestling turn-out ever. The Cougars won theirn against the U of O by a score of 25-16. I ccer team ends seasons The Clackamas Community College Soc cer team, after defeating Concordia 9-1 on Nov. 16, finished their season with a 4-5-1 overall and a league record of 1-4, finishing last in their division. "The whole style of play of our team was based on the defense," said coach Brian Waite, "The reason for this style was the fact that we were fortunate enough to have experienced, good defensive players on the team. As evidenced by our record, practically every team we played had trouble scoring against us. For example, we lost to Lewis & Clark in the final play of the game by a score of 2-1 (Lewis & Clark was the eventual champion of the league)." The most important thing about the sea son was not the team record, but simply to have fun playing the game. Everyone on the team gained valuable experience as they played several excellent teams. They im proved after each game. In reference to the entire league Waite thought that CCC was in a pretty even league. He also thought the returningpl next year would form a good nucleus much more competitive team. Waite expressed his gratitude to all i players on the team for putting in al hard work in order to play a better) Waite is returning to England aftei school year, and wished to say good and thank you.
