Waite exchanges math views ■ Clackamas Community College has a new math instructor who has exchanged lives with an old one. I Brian Waite is the new math instructor, replacing Harrison Platt. They exchanged jobs, houses, cars and bicycles and are even taking care of each others' cats and gold fish. I Waite is a math professor from Dorset, Eingland, where he has been teaching for 11 wars. His wife Sue, daughter Anna, 10, and son Jonathan, 9, are with him on his years exchange. They arrived at Washington D.C. August 19, for a five day orientation. This is their first visit to the U.S. and was arranged by the Central Bureau of Exchange which arranges for about 100 teachers per year to come to the U.S. ! The family traveled through New Mexico and Arizona before coming to Oregon, and Waite stated that people there had much more of a drawl, whereas Oregonians are straightforward and easy to communicate with. I Mr. Waite hasn't had very many diffi culties adapting, except that it's hard for him to get used to the great distances bet ween places. He was surprised at the distance between cities, and the large number of big department store "chains". He also remarked that the roads are wider and faster, but no one seems to walk anywhere. Mrs. Waite is still in the process of getting things organized at home. Something new for her is the microwave oven. Cat food is the only thing she's attempted to warm up in it so far. Anna has joined the Girl Scouts, and Jonathan keeps himself busy with foot ball and Cub Scouts. At Raleigh Grade School, which the two children attend, this is "Jonathan Week", and the younger Waite will tell about life in England. Waite said, "American classrooms, and the material covered, is about the same as in England, except for the fact that Ameri can students have aids, resource centers, tapes and slides to assist them. In England, students get more personnal attention from the teacher but classes are two hours long, and only consist of 14-15 students. To relax, the young people play a lot of skittle in the pubs. This is a game similar to bowling, with nine pins, three balls and the manual set ups." Waite is also the new soccer coach this year. He said that the team has quite a lot of work to do but hopes to set the basis to have something to build on in years to come. He likes the team's attitude of playing for fun, instead of being totally competitive.
