I OPINIONS Clackamas Community College June 1,1988 Page 2 Ready to move on to something bigger... Former editor looks back on CCC ’87-88 Well. it's almost over! A cou ple more days of regular classes, then finals, and last but not least summer vacation. I wouldn't want to suggest that summer vacation is going to be all that fun. because many of us poor souls will be working or going to school. But anyway, summer is always the best time of the year because it usually (remember, we live in Oregon) brings sunny weather and the right atmosphere. I am certainly glad school is almost over. This year has been a lot of fun, and a lot of hard work! It w as worth it because I learned a lot, but now I’m ready to move on to something bigger, the School of Journalism at University of Oregon. Before that 1'11 be working and most important, going to Holland for a couple of weeks. But now more about this col lege. There is still this apathy that Clackamas Community College is not a good institu tion, and I honestly don’t understand why, I learned a lot here, especially working on the paper and helping with the levy election campaign. Like I said this has been a great year, and this is what I remember of it. In November, the college attempted to pass the levy; unfortunately it was not Wooden shoe like to know by Heleen Veenstra Editor successful. The “Print” staff went on a raft trip to the Deschutes river, where Mitch was almost sucked out of the raft. The Iran-Contra scandal was something that made me think “this can only happen in America.” Besides my nickname “hollanoid” I ac quired the name of “Chief,” and was also embarassed/made fun of often. We, as a “we want to know what is going on around cam pus” staff, found out that Paul Kyllo is a very good friend. Christmas time was pretty hec tic in the trailer since we were doing secret pal stuff, and everybody was sneaking around to stay anonymous. Gorbachev comes to the States and he and Reagan sign an Arms reduction treaty for the short range missiles. We also got to experience the “downfall” of the electric church. So to speak, it was the “tragedy” of Jimmy Swaggart, and Jim and Tammy Bakker. Surprise, surprise, Gary Hart decided to re-enter the race for presidential candidate, after the Donna Rice affair. Student Government and our staff Went to a CCOSAC (Community Colleges of Oregon Student Association and Commissions) conference and we were pro bably the most fun and obnox ious group. Portland is in con troversy about the Michael Stoops issue. In March there is the second try to pass the levy. Due to, what I think was a great cam paign, we passed. All the presidential candidates are cam paigning very hard. The race between the two Democrats Jesse Jackson and Michael Dukakis is, by far, the most in teresting. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not celebrated here on campus. It was kind of sad since it was 20 years ago that King was assassinated. Foreign politics becomes an important issue. Should America be in the Per sian Gulf, and should we be in Central America? Neale Frothingham goes to Washington D.C. to lobby for financial aid and child care. Besides foreign politics Reagan also needs to concentrate on issues like medical care and the homeless people. Here on cam pus a controversy is created around Faith Taylor, our new ASG President, who was accus ed of campaigning at the polls due to an innocent incident. Student governments of all community colleges in Oregon go to the state capital in Salem to oppose the semester conver sion. The “Print” staff goes horseback riding and returns to school the next week with “horse legs.” The college summer schedules are ready. Just one “little” misfortune, all 80,000 copies have the wrong tuition in it. Many volunteers, armed with labels that have the right tui tion, correct the schedules. Reagan is now in Moscow to have another summit with Gor bachev. They are talking about human rights and more Arms reduction. Hopefully they’ll come to another agreement. Well, these are some of the things I remember. There is a lot more, but this is all I’m go ing to write. This is it for me. I had a lot of fun at this college the past two years and I’ll never forget it. Ciao, who knows maybe I’ll see you guys later, here or somewhere else! Time flies when you’re having fun... True meaning of teamwork and friendship T can hardly believe it’s almost over. My two years here at CCC have nearly come to a close-arid yet it seems like only yesterday that I first arrived. Time flies when you’re hav ing fun as the saying goes - and a very true saying this is. -Have your ever noticed how slowly the hands move on the clock when you’re at work on a beautiful sunny day? Then on an equally beautiful , day at -the beach, the hands seem to be on fast forward? It just doesn’t seem fair, does it? But if life were fair then it wouldn’t be much of a challenge and how boring life would be without challenges. There’s nothing like a challenge to bring out a competitive Spirit and it’s the competitive spirit that allows for world survival. During my time here at Clackamas I have been faced with many challenges most of which I had not expected when I .irst enrolled. There was only one challenge I expected arid it turned out to be not much of a challenge after all This challenge was one of not know ing a single soul on campus when I began. Unlike many of the students on campus, I was not from Clackamas County when I first came to CCC. I had moved from Portland where I had graduated from Madison High School. Most of my classmates from Madison who were going to attend a community college, stayed closer to home and went to Mt. Hood or Portland. This meant I was going to have to make all new friends and being somewhat of a shy person this is sometimes difficult for me. My first day at Clackamas found me at Trailer B for my work-study job after my morn ing classes-. My job was to answer phones, do some light typing and other miscellaneous office work. Upon entering the world of Student Publications I was met with some very interesting characters who 1 soon discovered were the Editor and section editors of “The Print.” I immediately began to wonder if I was in the right place. How Could these rowdy, skateboarding, childish people be college, students? Let alone put out a newspaper every week? I soon discovered that their capabilities outweighed their antics by a longshot. It seems that once you enter the world of Student Publica tions you are almost immediate ly drafted for “The Print Staff.” I began doing advertis ing and before I knew it, I was a page editor with my own page ! The experience I’ve gained on “The Print” over these past Six terms will benefit me tenfold in the future. I’ve improved my spelling and grammar skills by being the Copy Editor; I’ve found found out that I’m quite an opinionated person as the Opinions Editor; and most of all I’ve learned how to deal with the deadlines of life through meeting (or not- meeting) the newspaper’s deadlines. Although I have to admit that I’ve discovered some valuable akills I hadn’t previously realiz ed that I possessed, the best part On the lighter side about belonging on “The Print” staff has been the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made. I’ve learned, a great deal about the true meaning of team work arid how much easier and enjoyable it is to work with peo ple you like and consider to be your friends. Without friends life can be so lonely and work that is normally enjoyable can become downright tedious. It’s difficult to predict what you’ll find as you walk along life’s path - whether it will be smooth sand dr giant jagged rocks,, but there’s one thing that’s, nice to count on and that is a true friend. The friends I’ve made here at CCC I will always remember arid I hope that even though we will all part at some time that we will always be able to think back on our days at CCC and remember the friends we made here as some of the best we’ve ever known. I know I will; Thank you all for making my two years here both a learning experience a tremendous amount of fun. I will always remember all of you. Lenard ______
