SPORTS Clackamas Community College Page 7 May 4,1988 8-3 record Hot Cougars bum Saints top league by Mark Borrelli Staff Writer Even rain, let alone the Mt. Hood Saints couldn’t cool down the red hot men’s Cougar baseball team, as they cruised to their seventh straight win, 10-8, over the helpless Saints. The win put Clackamas in sole possession of first place with a sparkling 8-3 record. Linn- Benton is currently in second place with a 8-6 mark, the top two teams make the playoffs. The game played at Gresham was marred by some very nasty weather and Coach Paul Roeder feels that it may have hurt his team. “The game should have been called after 5 innings when we were ahead 8-3.” The bad weather caused a slippery playing surface, that proved to be respon sible for some Cougar miscues. “Hood got some cheap runs. The outfield was too wet to play on and we had four infield boots that led to more of their runs.” On the mound for Clackamas was Jim Burnette, who did a respectable job .. considering the weather and other factors. “He gave up nine walks and he’s a pit cher who doesn’t give up walks. He has -very good control.” Roeder contributes much of Burnette’s problems to the men in blue. “The umpires couldn’t find the strike zone all day.” have scored 97 runs, and we have 88 RBI’S to go along with that. Only six runs have scored for us that we haven’t had a RBI.” The streaking Cougars will try to get back to action Thursday when they try to make up a game with Mt. Hood weather permit ting. The Cougars are scheduled to play Portland State here Satur day in a non-league game, but Rhodes pizzaz ■' ' .... * «/ ;; ; . ..A •" * - ; “They threw their best two pitchers at us, and we hit them pretty hard. ” Offensively the Cougars were pounding their opposing pitcher again. Robb Kirkpatrick went Kevin Kvarstrom 2-2, and David Horine provided the big bat with a solo shot to souvenier land. “They threw their best two. pit chers at us, and we hit them pret ty hard.” Clackamas hitters have been very successful in hitting with a man on this year. “We may cancel in order to make up a game Sunday with Linn-Benton. All, of course, if the weather cooporates. “The rain hurts the other teams more than it hurts us. We have a strong six man rota tion, that no one else has.” Even with the winning streak, Roeder still is not over-confident about his team’s chances. “We’re play ing well, but we definitely do not have it locked up yet.” Coupon If you earn $20 or more...
