Spring’s arrival gives new life, hope to bleak winter term Hooray—Spring is on its way! It has been a long winter again this year for me. One that I have almost made it through just on the basis of knowing Spring will be here soon. I haven’t always disliked winter and I don’t really dislike it now. The only thing I dislike is the depression and grayness that seems to settle after the clean, briskness of the first snow leaves. I always seem to have trouble keeping up with my classes dur ing this time of the year and this year has been no exception. Most of the time I get started on my assignments and when I get them about halfway completed I decide that I don’t like the work I’ve done and start the projects all over again. This soon turns into a never-ending cycle of rough drafts and unfinished problems. Homework is not the only thing I find difficult finishing, I even find it difficult to write this column every other week as well as an occasional editorial. Work ing on the newspaper becomes more of a job during the winter than a creative social activity like it is the rest of the year for me. Most of the time I enjoy the freedom I have to express my opinions and feelings on paper each week, but it becomes harder and harder to come up with good topics to write about. It’s as if the Bring Olympic spirit, pride into your life Well, the Olympics are over, and I have to admit, I’m one pro ud Dutch (or Hollanoid, as my friends call me) in this American world. In case you didn’t keep up with the Olympics, I’ll briefly describe what happened. Holland gained seven medals (three gold, which were won by one person, two silver, and two bronze) and they were all in the only event we ac tually participated in,1 speed; skating. The medals were totally unex pected, and that made the victory look even better. Besides., Holland, a tiny country, on (and for one third below) the North Sea, and one sixth the size of Oregon overshadowed the USA with one medal. It really made me, and many other Dutch, very happy. ’ But I don’t want to talk about the rivalry. I’d rather talk about the warmth you get to feel for other countries because of athletes’ Olympic achievements, or misfortunes. It’s weird, but having the ex perience of living in two cultures made me also feel good when an American won a medal. Before, I just wanted the Dutch to win, and if I knew that we would be very bad in one event, I would support some other Western European country. But that’s about how far my being suppor tive went. Now it actually moves me when for example Dan Jansen falls twice, Eric Flaim gets silver, and Brian Boitano wins gold. I think that is what the spirit of the Olympics is all about. I know some people from other countries, and they felt happy about an American suc cess, besides their own country’s success. And even Americans who seem to be supportive of other countries. I thought the Soviets and East Germans were great, especially in skating. These people sure know how to perform well, though we were pretty awesome too. And how about Eddie the Eagle? He really made the world come together, and showed what the Olympics is about. Who real ly cares about a medal as long as you have a great time and other people share that feeling with you! Anyway, the Olympic spirit of sharing your feelings with each other, no matter what country you are from, makes life great. Why don’t you make life your own Olympics and have a great time filled with pride but most of all, pleasure! world goes into hibernation tem porarily. Everyone around me seems to be having the same feelings. They all seem as tired as I do and many are just waiting the last few weeks until Spring gets here to become motivated and full of life again. It’s almost as if the bodies and minds of people shut down to conserve the energy they will need when they must come alive again with the flowers and trees. Spring, to me, means sunshine and rebirth. The flowers raise their faces to the sun and drink up the rain when it falls freshly on their petals. The trees begin to dress themselves in leaves of green again after standing so stark and bare all winter. People also begin their own type of rebirth. Already you can see people out enjoying the sun shine in shorts and short sleeves whenever the sun breaks through the clouds. The smiles and bright eyes are evidence of people look ing forward to Spring and the vacation that follows. There can even be seen a lightness in people’s steps. It’s amazing what a little sunshine can do for the world. Just talking about Spring’s ar rival cheers me up, but I can’t be too hasty and forget that there are still assignments to be com pleted and final exams to be taken. This term isn’t over yet and there is still a chance to do as well as I know I can do in my classes. The same can be true for you too. Don’t give up just yet - there are still (or only, if you are an op timist) two weeks left. If you haven’t lived up to your expecta tions during this bleak wintet term, there’s still a chance to make a good showing. Then after those two weeks you’ll be able to take a week off and know that you did the best you couk possibly do. I wish you all goo< hick in your quest for academi; achievement.
