Turkey trot awards prizes Guest Columnist Mark Borel taff Write by Steven Ziolkowski Contributing Writer____________________ Football needed at Clackamas As wintej arrives and Christmas gets closer,' it becomes football season. The college bowl games start in a couple of weeks and last until January. The NFL playoff will soon be upon us, and then of course in January comes the big one, the Super Bowl to end the football season. The only problem with foot ball season is not the number of . games or the length of the season. The problem that I think should be dealt with by us first is. the lack of a football program at Clackamas Com munity College. The last season Clackamas fielded a football team was in 1978 under head coach Bill Hargadine. Athletic director Dale McGriff held the head coaching reins from 1974 through 1977, and posted a 6-3-1 record in 1976, and a 14-14-1 record is his three year tenure a coach for the Cougars. The Cougars played in a in dependent league, so they were not able to go to the playoffs, but they did finish second in the league. The Cougars played their home games where the soc cer field is now, on Saturday afternoon, and received surpris ingly good support, drawing over 750 people a gaiTA\ Mt. Hood an£o<b^ reasure ■ Valley were th '^jnly other Oregon Corr /jyxity Colleges with footb^ /programs, but soon dr'^xw their football progr' after Clackamas dro\^/theirs. Since there were c ^/two teams in Oregon for thzCougars to play, this meant a lot of travel for Clackamas, but the cost of a football team per player compared to some of the other sports currently here at Clackamas proves that finan cially a football team here would be feasible. With the amount of good high school football players in the state, the major colleges just can’t handle all of them. A community college would in- crease in enrollment and a good high school player would be able to carry his skills and dreams farther by coming to a two year school for the first two years. In fact 60-75 young men would benefit, as this is the amount of players that would be able to play football after high school, and receive finan cial help while doing it. Clackamas football ended after the 1978 season for political reasons, not for financial reasons. Let’s apply some pressure to the administration here at Clackamas to bring back football, and show them that a lot of us do want to support our college football team; we don’t want to watch, and cheer for some other college team Saturday on TV. Talk coming out of Mt. Hood Community College is that they are very close to getting football back. Maybe if they do, some people here at Clackamas will see the light, and follow suit and do the same. But let’s not wait for what Mt. Hood might do. Let the ad ministration know that we want football back, and e’re not going to be satisfied until we get it. d. $200 or BO.
