Sports Page 8 Curran’s Corner by Christopher Curran Design/Sports Editor Writer discovers horizons Again and again I’ve writ ten about basketball, football, baseball, and most sports out there. I often welcome a chance to write about something new. All the preparations were made and we were all set to go. The only thing left to do was show up at “The Print” office at 8 a.m. After accomplishing this, 1! of us loaded into a Clackamas Community Col lege van and two more into a lead car. Our destination: Maupin, Oregon. The population: 510. Our mission: A test of strength, endurance, and fear. The obstacle: The Deschutes River. As Don Shula, our leader, stated it, the first concern was safety, education was number two, and fun was number three. The first order of business was putting on the wetsuits, This took awhile. Not to brag, but I didn’t have the trouble that most had, and come to think of it the other two male members of our group (Shula and Staff Writer Eric Berg) ac complished this task easily also. As the females put on their wetsuits (it seemed to take forever), Berg and I tested the water and the suits for their Special Sweet^Rflses Buttercup fjfozut Phone 655 3555 Orégon City Shopping Center SKIS (132cm), Tyrolia bindings, poles, women’s Koflach boots (7), all $100. Between two rubber rafts, there were six people in one and seven in the other. I was lucky, I was in the raft that was equipped with the cooler stuffed with food. On the stretch of the Deschutes we covered, the calm water didn’t last long. Soon we were up to the first set of rapids. These waves, which looked tolerable from the road, were suddenly coming at us fast. The end result was a series of waves that drenched the two front paddlers, Staff Writer Jodie Martini and me. During this time we went through over a half-dozen of these rapids, our fears were washed away by anticipa tion and expectations. I was sorry to see it end. We took the rafts out about 30 to 40 yards up river from Shearer’s Falls, which is considered among the most dangerous of river con ditions. Shearer’s Falls is about eight miles north of Maupin. Taking the wetsuits Off took almost as much time as putting them on. After a short dinner at a cosy Maupin diner, the group got back in the van and traveled the two hour trip home. Among them, a sports writer who found one more spot that was worth covering again and again. Clackamas Community College Cougars host meet By Mark Borrelli Staff Writer Clackamas Community Col lege hosted its annual invita tional cross country meet Satur day Oct. 17, and the host Cougars had some outstanding individual performances for the men, and a strong team showing from the women. Keith Farrell led the way for the men, crossing the finish line first with a time of 25:36. “Keith ran a very strong race, he beat the rest of the field by 57 seconds,” praised Coach Mike Hodges. Other top finishers for the men were Jerry Durant, finishing 10th with a time of ,27:19. Ryan Burco was right behind Durant finishing 11th .with a time of 27:23. The next Cougars to finish was Scott Sheldon who finished 13th with a time of 27:33. As a team the Clackamas men didn’t fare so well, finishing third behind Bellvue and Mt.. Hood, Coach Hodges definitely was not pleased with his team’s performance, ‘‘As a team we didn’t run very well. We let five Bellvue runners get between our first, and fifth place runners and we let two Mt. Jlood run ners get between us.” At the start of the year Clackamas, the defending State Champion was favored to repeat, but coach Schedules Help Wanted $18,000 for working 2 days per month? Hodges doesn’t consider Clackamas the favorite anymore. “Mt. Hood has to be the favorite. We have to run smarter to have a chance in the State Championships.” The women however ran a very good team race and finish ed second behind a very tough team from Lane. “That was the best performance by a Clackamas women’s team in some time,” rioted Hodges, “That also was the first time a Clackamas team has finished ahead of a Mt. Hood team in quite some time.” Top in dividual performances were turned in by numerous Clackamas women, with three Cougar runners crossing the line in the top ten. Winning the event in a time of 18:40 was Sarah Elliott from Mt. Hood. Molly McArtor was the first to cross for Clackamas - coming in 4th with a time of 19:36. Right ^behind her was teammate Jeanne Barnett finishing fifth with a time of .19:46. Heather McElheny closed out the top ten, with a tenth place finish of 20:18.
