Hood by Mark Borrelli Staff Writer____________________________ The Clackamas Cougars co-ed cross-country team ventured to Gresham for the Mt. Hood In vitational, and the men finished third while the women came in fifth. Top finishers for the men were Keith Ferrell, who ran the five mile course in a time of 26:11, leading him to a fourth place finish. “Keith Ferrell was 25 seconds behind the top Highline runner. In this race he finished 17 seconds behind cutting eight seconds off his time,” observed cross-country coach Mike Hodges. The next Cougar runner to cross the line was Scott Sheldon, who finished 21st with a time of 28:14. As a team, Clackamas ended up with 113 points while coming in third. Highline was the first place finisher with 17 points. “We expected to finish third, and we did, we could have been doser to second, but we had some sick runners. It’s going to be tough to catch Highline, but our first goal is to win the State Championship, and continue to improve,” said Hodges. The women were not quite as successful, as the men, finishing fifth with 112 points, while first place finisher Spokane collected 31 points. Top performers for Clackamas were Molly McArtor, who finish ed 14th with a time of 20:30 in the 5K run. “That’s the first time she finished as our top runner, she's been our most consistent all year.” Crossing the finish line in the 18th position was Jeanne Barnett, with a time of 20:56. Heather McElheny finished with a time of 21:37 for 24th place, and the praise of her coach, “Heather has shown the fastest improvement of anyone.” Coach Woods expects that Mt, Hood and Lane will run 1 and 2, in league, but expects that his girls squad will keep improving and get better.
