Sports Curran’s Comer by Christopher Curran Sports Editor Let’s call it a year Let me start off by saying, this has been one of the most en joyable school years that I’ve ever had. What now.you’reisaying. I’m going to get mad at something and rat on it throughout the whole article. Well you are wrong. This week, being our last, I’m going to take a look at the year in review of the sports section. There is probably nowhere else you could find a sports editor curled up sleeping on the couch in his office when as his 2 p.m. interview walked in with three staff members. If you looked in another place you would have trouble finding the sports editor getting up at 6 a.m., going to work, leaving work, and arriving at paste-up less than 15 minutes before it started at 3 p.m. I produced five pages of sports that week. Over the year I’ve done my best work under the higher amounts of pressure. Possibly the toughest week I had was in winter term when we were working on the March 4 issue. The whole paper was in massive chaos. During that week, the men’s basketball team won the nor thwest regional championship, the wrestling team won second at the nationals, Norm Bemey was named junior college wrestling coach of the year, two wrestlers turned in first place performances, the women’s basketball team had completed L For Sale □ ROCK-N-ROLL GUITAR AMP: Clips on belt w/headphones, chorus, delay, and overdrive effects- will work with larger amp also. Pag* 28 ball teams were getting set for their season, Cougar basketball star Pete Newlin was at the peak of the season, I was trying to get the scoreboard intact, and Cur ran’s Comer was examining the word “we.” On top of that I had a full week at work. This issue was a far cry from the first issue when I had a cross country story and an infor- “Fall term was a new and at times a frustrating experience. ” “Over the year I’ve done my best work under the higher amounts of pressure.” mative article about in tramurals. Fall term was a new and at times a frustrating experience. During that time I produced nine pages of sports in eight publications. During that term I did receive help from a work study student, a first year repor ting student, and I even publish ed a story from a member of the men’s basketball team. In that term stories that were printed in the sports section in cluded the cross country team’s season, the volleyball team’s season, the Clackamas bowling team, two shots at a weekly col umn (Over the Underground), intramurals, and even a couple of personality profiles. During winter term I got more help, but I was still writing almost half of the sports section. Some of that help during winter term came from former Photo Editor Lyn Marie Thompson and a girl from the Reporting II class who is still writing sports for the sec tion Sherri Michaels. In that term we expanded from the nine pages of fall to 14 pages in seven papers. In the term we expanded in other ways also. I added a scoreboard of not only games, but standings as well. The whole paper was doing better winter term. We produced the first 12 and 16 page papers in years for Qackamas. All of that work during winter took its toll on me. I started to feel the mid-year burnout (a little late). As this was happening, I came back from a not so relaxing spring vacation ready to take on the largest term of the year: spr ing. We were planning to publish 10 issues that term. As I walked around the first day of the spring term publica tions class wondering how I was going to make it through another 10 issues, an elderly (I joke with him on his mid 30’s age com pared to my 19 years of existence) gentleman walked up and asked WEDDING DRESS FOR SALE: Size 16, fit 5’ or under, asking price $250.00;plus three tier veil, asking price $75.00. What could I have said, but “write as many stories as you want.” And now from seeing his material I realize that the only decision I could make was a good one (Steven Zolkowski will be happy to see this). After that I received the name of another person who was an ex perienced writer and who had a story printed in The Oregonian. Shortly thereafter, Jerry Ulmer became the sports section’s se cond columnist. I’ve tried to make sure everything has been covered this year, and at times we didn’t, but I think for the most part, we have done a better job than I thought was capable of being done in the first place. In total there have been about 20 different sports writers, and I personally want to thank them for their contribu tions. Other specific thanks I must give are to: 1. and 2. Both photo editors, Lyn Marie Thompson and Beth Coffey for putting up with the constant question, “Do you have those sports photos yet?” 3. Our advisor, Linda Vogt who, when I was first name Sports Editor, helped me fin the athletic offices. 4. Our typesetter Crystal Pen ner for answering my questions “Is this possible?” and “Cai that be done?” 5. The rest of the staff fo putting up with a gloatin sports editor in times when w had a 12 page paper, and thei were six pages of sports and tb many eight page papers when offered to do four or five pages 6. A special thanks to thos people who helped me at time in which I have been ready | just walk away from the pap; and not look back. The Print will be differen next year. Most of the staff wi be gone. There are a few of i that will still be here. I will t back in a dual role as bot Design Editor and Sports Editc and I’ll bring Curran’s Corns with me. As a closing comment I don want to get too personal, but would just like to say it’s bee real, it’s been fun, and contras to the joke, it has been real fui It seems like I was always doing some kind of writing this yet 20 YR OLD PONY: 1/3 pinto, 1/3 shetland, 1/3 welsh.
