Personal records set as CCC takes 3rd in meet by Steven Ziolkowski Staff Writer The Cougar team moved up in a dark horse showing to cap ture third place at the Region IV Track and Field Champion ships, hosted by Lane Com munity College Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. Competing for Clackamas in the opening event, Brian Johnson faced a brisk wind to throw the javelin 171’ 6’. Jeanne Barnett and Christa Caraher battled the wind up the far side of the track for personal records (PR) in the women’s 10,000 meter race. Barnett plac ed first. Both Keith Kimberlin and Jed Wachlin ran in the 110 meter hurdles trials. Kimberlin set a PR at 16.26 seconds. Eric Christen took first in the 400 meter trials in heat one while Randy Lynch ran for Clackamas in the second heat trials. Running into the wind Rich Flemmer took 6’4’ in the high jump finals and Christen made a season’s best long jump of 22’8 1/2’. Running nearly three abreast in the 100-meter dash trials, An dre Scott, Jeff Faust and Ken Griffin competed for the Cougars. Scott placed first in the trials. Despite a hesitation at the first water jump, Mike Smith took first with teammate Scott Sheldon packing a second for a one-two finish in the 3,000 meter steeple chase. In the hammer throw Jim Baker placed third and Brian Johnson set a personal record. The Clackamas 400 meter relay team placed third in the next event. Jackie Harper ran in the 400 meter dash for the women and Christen placed second for the men. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars’ Tony Ogels batted Kirkpatrick and Scott Brown across the plate, but the margin remained and Clackamas came in one rim short.
