Sports Barnett runs the distance Taylor, Harper compete in Oregon Exchange tryouts by Stephan! Veff Opinions Editor “I like to put a little bit of stress on myself and see how good I can get,” commented Jeanne Barnett on running. Barnett, a long-distance runner (3,000; 5,000 & 10,000) for Clackamas Community Col lege, has been involved in runn ing for about three years. She began running cross country and track during her junior year at Molalla High School where she went to state n both sports during her senior year. “I didn’t really get into it jntil my senior year,” said Barnett about running com petitively. Her first two years at Molalla she played volleyball. She commented that she began unning to get in shape and to ust “goof-off.” Barnett’s interest in sports pro- iably came from her family who ire all involved in sports ranging rom swimming to biking to ten ds. Aside from running she en oys downhill skiing, swimming vith her mom, biking, hiking and waterskiing. Barnett’s dad, who is retired rom the Air Force and is iresently working as a teacher, sed to run a lot, but has switch ci to bicycling because of a back roblem. It was her dad and a ood friend who got her involved 1 running. She says it makes Tun ing easier if you “do it with ompany, don’t do it by ourself.” Future plans for Barnett in- ■ude one more year at lacka Jackamas before transferring to le Oregon Health and Sciences ¡enter in order to become a ietetic or an RN. When asked what she would like to be doing five years from now she said that she would like to, “have a job, hopefully be married, have a nice house and have a nice car, (but) no kids...they’re too much money.” Although Barnett can currently be found on the track she actually enjoys cross-country a lot more. “Cross-country you don’t run around in circles. Cross-country you go out and run around...in the field and stuff...(there’s) more to see and it’s fun because you’re not always watching the person. They might be around the bend and you have to try to catch them. It’s sort of like a game,” said Barnett. She claims that “it helps me with studying. I find that I do better after I run, then I can sit down and I’m not so anx ious to do stuff and can settle down and do my homework.” As a closing comment, Barnett said that she felt that “everybody should get out and run or do some kind or activities to keep their body into shape because I think that Americans are too fat.” Well if a little bit of stress hasn’t hurt Barnett, I don’t sup pose that it would hurt any of us either, now would it?
