About The print. (Oregon City, Oregon) 1977-1989 | View Entire Issue (April 29, 1987)
by Christopher Curran Sports Editor In The Print’s April Fool’s Day issue, I wrote a spoof article about building a dome on the Clackamas Community Col Choosing a name isn’t fun and games by Christopher Curran Sports Editor The Trailblazers, Lakers, Raiders, Mets, and Dodgers. Where do all of the profes sional sports teams get their names? Recently, yours truly was forced to deal with this pro blem. A couple of weeks ago I organized an intramural soft- ball team throughout The Print staff. We had all of the necessary signatures, but we still needed the name. I wanted to let the gang pick a name, but the first one we chose, a simple trademark known well throughout the staff, was rejected by our ad viser. , I wanted us to pick a name that would make the team pro ud to be taking the field against our opponents. This is something that the whole team would be telling their grand children about years from now. “Yeah Johnny, before your father was bom I was an athlete.” Just before the deadline we came up with one. It came from News Editor Heleen Veenstra, who is a native of Holland. The Nieuws (pronounced nuws) is the Dutch word for news. We all thought it was clever, but we procrastinated too long in selec ting the name and sending it in to the intramural director, therefore, the team now goes by “The Print.” When the city of Portland was in the process of selecting the name for their new National Basketball Association team, many ideas were given, in cluding the name “Chuckers” described as a team who “chucks” the ball into tjic basket. There are four new teams that will have to come up with names. April 22 the NBA an nounced that within the next three seasons there will be teams in Charlotte, North Carolina; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Miami, Florida; and Orlando, Florida. Tentative names are Charlotte Spirit, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, and Orlando Magic. Names are often taken for granted, what was it that William Shakespeare said, “...that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Personally I think Bill summed it up well. It’s not just sports teams who need names. They are everywhere: stores, states, cities, etc. Who has come up with all of these? It’s a question I’m afraid I do not have the power to answer, I had enough trouble picking a name for The Print’s intramural softball team. rfF ROCK-N-ROLL GUITAR AMP: Clips on belt w/headphones, chorus, delay, and overdrive effects- will work with larger amp also. Keyser, President Paul Kyllo Clackamas Community College 19600 S. Molalla Avenue Oregon City, Oregon 97045 Gentlemen: We read with interest Chris Curran's recent article concerning the Dome. We represent the Rev. Jimmie DeepPockets of the Faith and Hope Church of East Los Angeles. As you may also be aware, the Rev. is the head of PTD (Praise the Dome) Network. The Rev. DeepPockets is seeking a location for his annual "Bring 'em to the Water" and "Fill the Plate" revival meetings during the second or third week of January, 1988. We also represent Billie Sol Estes and Mr. Estes is looking for a facility such as your Dome for a week-long sales seminar. Mr. Estes has offered to find additional investors for you should you like to make the Dome a public-private partnership and avoid the problems of unrelated business income. We'll look forward to working with you on thése matters and I would ask Chris Curran to keep on writing as he surely has a career in journalism. Sincerely Mark P.
