Sports Leonard beats Hagler, among other things SOFTBALL TRACK April 7 Clackamas 8,6 Edmonds 1,1 NW Qualifiers Mike Smith, Steeplechase Eric Christen, Long Jump and 400 meters Jeanne Barnett, 5,000 meters Rick Hanson, 400 meter hurdles April 4 Highline 7,7 Clackamas 3,5 From the halls of Randall to the center of the community I come to ya once again from my office in Trailer B. Today’s topic: I don’t have one. (I’ve always wanted to do that.) In this time of great despair, writer’s block as it’s commonly referred to, I don’t think it would be too terribly wrong if I relay on to you some sports facts and ideas I have heard recently. I would- be remiss if I didn’t mention Sugar Ray Leonard’s boxing victory over Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Marvin, you didn’t look very marvelous Monday night. The number 13 proved to be unlucky for Hagler, who was defending his WBC mid dleweight title for the 13th time. It was the second time Leonard came out of retirement; two times is all it took. Baseball season is upon us. The major league season started Monday and the college season started in March. Baseball and softball are both fun to play, but unless you’re a diehard fan, it’s kind of slow moving on television, in my opi nion. A college basketball rules Personal Bests April 4, 1987 Mike Smith, Steeplechase Eric Christen, Long Jump and 400 meters Jeanne Barnett, 5,000 meters Rick Hanson, 400 meter hurdles Jackie Harper, 400 meter hurdles committee said last week that the three point line in college basketball will stay the distance that it is. More than 35 percent of the coaches who were ques tioned were in favor of moving the three point line back nine in dies. The ruling comes after a season of controversy over the distance of the line (including the “Curran’s Comer” of The Print’s Feb. 11 issue). The same rules committee made some changes for the 1987-88 college basketball season. The most notable of these says that when an inten tional foul is called, the team who was fouled will keep possession of the ball. Before this, it was the team who fouled who got to keep the ball. With another term of classes comes another term of in tramurals. Deadline for registration for coed softball is Friday, April 10. Each team must have at least three females per game. Competition will take place Mondays. See Kathie Woods (ext. 418) for more details. GOING THE DISTANCE - Eric Christen qualifies for the northwest regionals with his personal best in the long jump at Saturday’s track meet at Clackamas. Photos by Stsvon Ziolkowski WM?
