Sports College hosts first Women’s softball team By Julie Miller Sports Editor Clackamas Community College is host to a women’s softball team this year and Head Coach Phil Garver com mented that, “this is really a plus for the College and we’ve had a lot of positive response.” This team is not only the first woman’s softball team for the college, but is the only women’s community college softball team in the state of Oregon. The team is starting out the Spring term with a 2-7 record. The last game they played was at Bedmonds Community Col lege in which they lost a dou ble header 6-1 and 7-4. In an earlier series the team came back against Shoreline Com munity College to split, losing the first 8-7 and winning the second 7-1. “We are just getting the hang of this modified league,” said Head Coach Phil Garver. “Angie Stein did a whale of a job. She looks like she’s going to be our modified pitcher.” With defense being their strongest asset, Garver stated that the team only has to work on their hitting. “We have real good defense. We just have to hit the ball. We have to learn to hit those slow pitches. We aren’t sitting back and waiting to hit the slow ball when we are used to the fast ones,” said Garver. Bruce Tony, Garver’s assis tant coach this year, said, “We have a great infield. The six girls that play infield could probably play at any four year school in Oregon/’ Tony is from Oregon City and played Baseball at Western Oregon State and also played ten years of men’s ma jor fast pitch. “As soon as we start hitting the ball, and we did hit better this weekend, we’ll be great. Our defense is unbeatable and with the way Angie Stein pitched last weekend we’ll be unstoppable,” Tony said. Stein feels she played accep tably. “If my pitching can im prove, I think we can be really good,” she said. “Our defense is good, but we just need to get our timing down. Even the defense goes down when the pitching is bad, cause they get hit after hit and that brings the attitude down. But, we’re up and that should help us out.” The Lady Cougar Softball team plays again today at Western Oregon State College and Friday they will be at home to host Olympic Com munity College at 2 p.m. Angie Stein catches ball during practice.
