Siler, Baker place high at Championships By Rodney Fobert Of The Print The Clackamas Community College women’s track team sent three athletes to the Nor thwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championship meet on May 17-48, where temperatures reached into the 90’s. The two day event, held in Spokane, featured some of the top tracksters in Oregon and Washington. To compete in the event, participants had to meet a qualifying mark dur ing the regular season in their event. Julie Siler was the only Cougar runner to qualify for the NWAACC meet in two events. Siler competed in the 3000 and 5000 meter running events. During the first day of the meet, Siler ran to a second place finish in the 3000. She stayed with the leader for a majority of the race, but on the last lap, the eventual win ner of the race was able to pull ahead. Siler, however, came back ready for the second day of competition, running the 5000 meter race. Although her time of 18:13 in the event was not her best, it was more than good enough to win the race. “We were going for at least one win out of the two,” Coach Marilyn Wynia said. “Considering the heat, she did really well. There weren’t any exceptional times,” Wynia ad ded, because of the sweltering weather conditions at the meet. Competing in the discus at the Championships for the Cougar team was Debbie Blake. Blake took third in the meet with a throw of 123 feet, 10 inches. She had broken the school record earlier in the season, but was unable to match that effort over the weekend. Another Cougar, Hurdler Janet Hess, had qualified to compete in the 400-meter hurdles at the Championships, but was unable to run due to an injury which has been giv ing her trouble for much of the season. Coach Wynia said that “She’ll be back next year,” however. Commenting broadly about the 1985 track season, Coach Wynia said, “We had a lot of fun and learned some new things too.
