Anjanette Robbins and Les Kingsbury of the Cougar team were given byes in the match as the Lower Columbia team fielded only four opponents for the six-person Cougar team. In their non-league match against Linfield, the Cougars won by a score of 8-1. Coach Nancy Mikleton was impress ed with the team’s perfor mance by saying, “The girls’played really well.” Mikleton named Robbins and Kingsbury as having especially good matches against their Linfield opponents. Robbins moved up to play at the fourth position against Linfield as Stafford was unable to play due to illness. Robbins won the match with set scores of 6-3 6-1. Kingsbury had a fierce dual against her Linfield opponents in the fifth position. After los ing the first set 2-6, Kingsbury battled back to win with scores of 7-5 7-6. Bauer suffered the only loss for the Cougars, losing 2-6 1-6 in the first singles match. Bauer, along with Novak, was able to come back and win in the doubles match, however, with scores of 5-7, 6-2 and 6-3. The second doubles team of Osborne and Robbins were also victorious 6-4 6-5, as was the third doubles team of Kingsbury and Chris McGarry. Coach Mikleton feels the team has been playing well but added that recently they have been battling the flu and pull ed muscles. She pointed out that the level of experience of the teams they will be facing in upcoming matches will be a big factor in the success of the Cougar team.
