Sporta Matmen place 2nd in Willamette Invitational Ames, Duncan head contingency; six place By Rob Conner Of The Print Some eligibility and in jury problems have slowed Norm Berney’s wrestling team down in the early going of the ’83-’84 season. This past weekend, how ever, Berney was able to scrape together eleven grap- plers and make an impressive showing at the Willamette In vitational. Pacific University dom inated the team scoring, tallying 121 points. Clack amas’ 67 Vi -point total was well ahead of third-place Pacific Lutheran University’s 44/2. “We had six placers, which wasn’t bad. With eleven guys I thought we did real good,” Norm Berney com mented. Pacing the way for the Cougars were Dave Duncan and Scott Ames. Duncan, at 177, and Ames, at 190, each took top honors in their respective weight classes. Duncan, the sophomore transfer student from Grays Harbour Community College, was virtually untouched in his four matches. All of his op ponents managed to score a total of three points against him. In his first match, Dun can made short work of Lin- fields’ Krasneski, recording a fall at the :33 mark of round one. From there the matches got longer but not much closer. A 12-1 win over Pacific’s Prickett and a 5-0 decision over another Pacific 177-pounder, Kreiger, put Duncan in the final. Who did he face in the final but yet- another Pacific Boxer. This time it was Krasse, who had amassed 42 points in his three previous matches. Duncan shut down the Krasse attack, throttling his third straight Boxer 10-2. Ames’ performance was equally impressive. After a bye in the opening round, Ames manhandled Pacific- Luther an’s Keith Eager, 17-1. Guza of Pacific was then dropped 10-3. Mt.. Hood’s Kehrit became the victim in the final as Ames won a relatively close contest, 7-3. At 142 Clackamas’ Bark hurst found the competition a little tougher in the final. Pacific’s Baeth turned back Barkhurst 4-1. TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS—Clackamas grappler looks for pin in tournament action. Photos by Joel Miller Big Bob Young also made the final after successive wins of 16-2 and 8-3. Pacific’s Bishop was too much for Young in the finale, as the Boxer dropped the big Cougar for a fall. In the 167 pound class, Doug Kivett climbed through the consolation bracket after an opening round loss, earning third place. Kivett scored a 1:50 fall, and wins of 14-6 and 7- 4 in his conquest of the loser’s bracket. John Wachsmith at 126 was dropped in his first match, 8- 2, then won three straight in the consolation bracket for fourth. One of Wachsmith’s consolation victories was a big 32-5 thrashing of Mt. Hood’s Raines. “The only reason we aren’t competing with Pacific is depth,” Berney assessed. Pacific had 22 athletes entered in the tournament. Injuries have hampered Berney’s squad throughout the season. A key injury has come at 158, where Larry Joe Tan ner has been sidelined with possible torn tendons. “That’s hurt us real badly,” Berney commented. As a whole Berney feels his team’s progress is ad mirable. “We’re coming along,” he said. “Most of our people are improving week by week.” Friday Clackamas hosted Big Bend Community College in dual match action. The Cougars turned back the Washington-based school 30-18. John Wachsmith record ed the team’s only fall, pinn ing Brian Barr at the 6:58 mark. □ □□□ □ □□□□□ COUGAR IN CONTROL—Blain Schutzler works for advan tage in match with Randy Taibi.
