Women’s team splits weekend By Rob Conner Of The Print The Clackamas Com munity College women’s basketball team, which has now won five of their last six games, split the recent two game road trip. The Cougars lost to the College of Southern Idaho, 71-58, then came back the next night to down Treasure Valley 66-59. Clackamas could only manage 12 offensive rebounds in the loss to Southern Idaho. To make matter worse the Cougars handed the ball over 33 times. Southern Idaho was also credited with 20 team steals. With the help, the Idaho team was able to overcome a less than spectacular shooting performance (36 percent) to win the game handily. “We played a little flat this week,” Coach Nancy Mikleton commented. “It’s important that we pull it together on the road,” Mikleton added. Mikleton pointed out that at the end of the season Clackamas must travel to each of the top four schools in the league, beating each in succession in order to gain a regional berth. The Cougars trailed by just five at the half but couldn’t overhaul the girls from Twin Falls, Idaho. Terri Jo Kelly pac ed the way for Clackamas, hit ting seven of 15, ending the game with a season high of 17. Kelly’s eight thefts and five re bounds were often overlooked because of the 14 that registered in the turnover col umn. Coach Mikleton pointed out that, “Tammy Arbini was a real spark in the first game.” Upon investigation of the statistics it appears that Arbini’s shooting game produced less spark than an old champion, but her all-around play caught the eye of Mikleton. Arbini did record for offensive rebounds and three steals. Sophomore center Jamie Hill recorded some impressive defensive statistics. Hill was credited with four blocked shots and 12 rebounds, nine of which came at the offensive end. The Cougars came from behind in the victory over Treasure Valley. Trailing 31-28 at the half, Mikleton felt the bench contributed in the vic tory. “Our bench came in and put us ahead in that game,” she said. j“Cyd McCormick played really well,” Mikleton stated. McCormick added five points and three rebounds off the bench. COUGAR BASKETBALL PLAYER practices directing her teammates. Staff photo by Joel Miller Denise Wheatley re bounded from a dismal offen sive performance at Southern Idaho (one of six, four points), to post a game high 17 points against Treasure Valley. Wheatley was most influentual in downing the, ’Valley team during the second half com back. The 5’5” guard out of Oregon City scored 14 of her points after intermission. Of The Print Losing two basketball games in one weekend is bad enough; but when the score of both games is identical, it’s like having a nightmare twice in one night. The 82-66 score was the nightmare for the Clackamas Community College men’s basketball team on Friday and Saturday nights last weekend. Assistant Coach Paul Fiskum said, “Southern Idaho was the best team we’ve ever faced in the four years I’ve been coaching here. I US5 tHI MW SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EX TENSION!!! We only beat them by four, here, last time,” Miklton added. Cougars face double trouble By Rick Obritschkewitsch A Jamie Hill upped her team leading rebounding average to 9.8 per game by collecting 26 boards over the two games. The Cougars out-rebounded Treasure Valley 33-26. 40-33. Also, Cougar Tom Welle scored 26 points in the losing effort. As a team, the Cougars were only able to hit 39 percent from the field, and turned the ball over 20 times.
