communique’ ASG constitution TK STRIKE FORCE! Know why you are not voting on changes I Voting is just one of those bothers that is not worth the effort; especially when it is concerning student govern ment. For a few meetings during winter term, the Associated Student Government spent the time in the Fireside lounge, to show the student body exactly what they are all about, and what they do. It probably appeared to most students that ASG was not really doing anything worthwhile. The studet officials were simply sit ting around saying whether one group would get the money they requested, and whether another group should be recognized as a club. That is your basic ASG meeting, just a lot of this “unimpor tant stuff.’’ Student government is in charge of $77,970 worth of this unimpor tant stuff this year. So what is the big deal about what they are doing? So what if there are not any clubs on campus. And so what if there are not too many functions to attend. All we are here for is to get an education. We do not need any functions to help break up the monotony of hitting the books. But actually, if you ask anyone on the campus who is involved in any club or organization, or anyone who attends any functions at the College, you will find, that as long as there is an ASG, a good representative group is needed. That is exactly what tomorrow’s and Friday’s elections are all about. To help give the student body the ASG we need. So take a close look at the constitution revisions being proposed, and decide for yourself whether the proposal is better than the ASG we now have. Then there is the vote of the non voter. After you have analyzed the situa tion, and you still find that voting does not matter, then do not vote. But first make sure that is what you want. At the last ASG meeting I was informed by student government officers, fellow senators, and College staff, that the majority of students at Clackamas don’t vote. Therefore, they do not care about what is happening. I have doubts of my newly found knowledge. Trying to maintain an open mind, 1 chose to set aside the fact that we have about 100 voters voting, out of a possible 4,000.1 believe and HOPE this' will change for very viable reasons. In the next elections, we will be voting on constitution revisions. One of the revisions deals with cutting the number of senators from 20 to 10. These cuts are cutting back both YOUR voices and YOUR choices. Are we going to sit back and watch fewer students run our school? When this issue is brought before us at the polls, I encourage NO votes on the en tire packet concerning constitu tion revisions for two reasons.. One is that the discussion at the (ASG) meeting was poor and sloppy. The second is, we can open the eyes of the ASG and show them that we do CARE. Please let’s vote so we can have things going the way we want them to go. w 1 ' ■ J rj i Reactions, suggestions, comments, and ways you want to help (besides voting), should be written down, and turned into the student activities office so they can be placed in my box. PLEASE vote, and thank you, —1 7 / / dollars. Vote yes for the con stitutional amendments. You will be better represented. Sincerely, Joseph P. Schweizer Asst, to the President ASG Thank you for time to speak Jerri L. Hale ASG Senator Yes votes sought tomorrow To the Editor: Tomorrow and Friday you will have an opportunity to make history. The Associated Student Government has ap proved proposed constitutional amendments, and is now presenting them to you for a vote.. Numerous hours have • been put into these proposed revisions by members of the ASG so that we might better serve, you. The changes are necessary to provide for a more functional group. By voting YES on the ballot, you will be saying that you want a student govern ment that is effective in representing and serving your needs. A NO vote is asking for the same cumbersome group to be in charge next year. A YES vote will mean a reduction in the numbers of ASG personnel, and a savings in hundreds of dollars. A NO vote will be more costly- for the students next year, and perhaps in the years to come. These changes have been long in coming, and pro gressive with the times. We need to tighten the belts of the ASG in terms of numbers and page 2 — To the Editor: I would like to thank the Clackamas Community Col lege Student Senate for the hospitality given to me on March 5 when I addressed them in my capacity cis a can didate for Congress in Oregon’s new 5th Congres sional District. As I told the students I ad dressed, these budget cuts are wrong and extremely damag ing to the American educa tional system. I would urge Clackamas County residents to become active in the present Congres sional campaign. Our current Congressman Denny Smith is one of the most ultra-right zealots in Congress! He has supported Reagan’s reinstate ment of peace-time draft registration and voted against veteran» educational benefits. I have opposed Smith vigorous ly on these and many other issues.
