Szanto predicts encore By Wanda Percival Of the Print Clackamas Community College soccer blasted Lewis and Clark College 4-0 last week. Coach Janos. Szanto, a former member of the Hungarian National soccer team, expects another blow-- out seasons for the state cham pions. “I’m sure we’re not go ing to lose any games this year,”he said. “I was trained to win and that’s how I operate?’ Five hooters have return ed to the CCC squad, con tributing to what Szanto believes will be another suc cessful season. “I’m very confi dent that we’re going to keep our title,” he said. Returning is team captain Jim Keogh who has been a “big help in conducting practices and keeping the team together,” Szanto noted. Center forward Cleve Nyberg, mid fielder Mark Bigson, half-back Tom Welle, and Jeff Johnson have also returned. Szanto noted Johnson has had a good start this season with an average scoring record of two goals a game. “He scored three goals against Lewis and Clark last year in finals,” Szanto added. Johnson didn’t let up against Lewis and Clark last week as he kept his record of two goals. Goals were also scored by Mark Gibson and Jim Keogh. “It was a really good game,” Szanto said. “They’re a good, strong team, although we’re still not settled down. The score was 0-0 at half time and has been in every game so far. It takes time to settle.down and relax.” While the Cougar’s have a young team this year, Szanto said they were all well-trained previously and that with thé “right attitude”, they hâve the potential to be first class players. The Cougar’s defeated Reed College in a pre-season game, 5-1. Their next game is Sat. at Portland State Universi ty at 2 p.m. Sports Classified To Stephen King fans: Have “Cujo”, call the campus you picked up his latest ext. 309,310. Women’s cross country hopeful Although the women’s cross country team consists of only six women, Coach Marilyn Linsenmeyer feels con fident that her team will place in the top three at state com petition. With only one returning runner this year, the team is starting out young. Linsenmeyer noted they have done well in their first two meets, but it’s still too early to judge their performance. Alice Hungar, a graduate of Oregon City High School Wednesday Oct. 7, 1981 has dominated the number one position, while Anna Museus from California is in the second slot. Although, Linsenmeyer said, “second, third, and fourth positions could be challenged at any time.” The women are all close in their times, so that makes workouts easier to do as a team.” The team started working out in July, so they’ve already had three months of training. Although the team is working out hard now, their main goal is to do well in track. Therefore, the workouts are not meant to make the women peak during . cross country season, rather *’ during the track season. Linsenmeyer isn’t worried about her team peak ing out early. She said, “if they follow the workouts I’ve designed for them, they’ll do okay.” _] i i ipi'i I hub PHOTO SPECIAL! / When you nave your 1W, 126 or 135 color print film (C41 compatible) developed and printed at our regular low price—3x/size Code */25 LIMITED TIME OFFER s Wednesday, Sept. 30, the team participated in the KEX, Fastbreak Trailblazer run in Downtown Portland. “The women get along great together and are looking for ward to having a prosperous season,” said Linsenmeyer. / Page 4
