sports Cougs host state meet By Brian Rood Of The Print Just as it was at the Oregon Community College Athletic Association league finals, so it was at the Oregon Community College state meet as both the men’s and women’s track teams again finished in third place. For the men, their point total of 841/2 left them trailing first- place Lane Community, with 167, whose depth was far foo much for the Cougar men. Mt. Hood again finished in second place, amassing 144V2 points. The women tracksters also finished in their accustomed third place, but it was Mt. Hood who took the women’s team title, followed by Lane and ccc. Under what had to be ter- med ideal conditions, with skies clear and temperatures in the middle seventies, several CCC athletes, both male and female, turned in outstanding performances, performances. Bret Brouse, it seemed, did everything except hold the tape at the finish line as he took first place in the 100 meters in a national qualifying time of 10.5. Brouse also ran on both the mile and the 400-mile relay teams as well as placed fourth in the 200 meters. Bro use’s ef forts combined with those of Bob Ryan and Dan and John Martin took second in the 400-meter relay, just one-tenth of a second behind first-place Lane who clocked 42.5. On the women’s side of things,. Sue Hanneman won the 400 meters, setting a new state record enroute to the vic tory. Hanneman’s time of 57.2 will no doubt send her to the national meet in San Angelo, Texas. Hanneman was also named to the first team of all conference squad. Others gaining notice at the state meet for the women were Dani Varner who tossed the javelin 115’ 8” for sixth place. Varner, along with Jodi Moore, Lisa Pierce and Sue Hanneman, clocked a 52 flat in the 400 meters which was good enough for third place. Nancy Reynolds finished third in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, with times of 10:26.8 and 18:06.4, respec tively. The women’s mile relay team also finished third in a time of 4:18.6. Beth Kokesh also had a third place finish to her credit with a 4:42.2 in the 1500 meters. For the men, John Martin also had a rather exceptional day as he finished third in the 200 meters, setting a new CCC Cougar nine .500for week By Brian Rood Of The Print The CCC men’s baseball team ended up .500 for the week as the team lost to Linn- Benton on Tuesday before winning two against Judson Baptist on Saturday and split ting a double-header with Lin field’s J.V.s. Against Linn-Benton in Albany, Cougar pitchers allowed 12 walks, nine in the first two innings, which allowed L.B. to amass 17 runs in the first two innings. The Cougs could not make up the dif- ference, losing the contest, 18- 8. In the second game of the double-header, CCC scored three runs in the top of the first while L.B. scored one in their half of the inning. The Cougs made it 4-1 in the third before L.B. made it 4-3 in the fifth. In the sixth inning, with two outs and a man on second, the L.B. batter hit a ground ball to short. The CCC shortstop flip ped the ball to third for the easy tag out, but according to the umpire the tag was too high and he called the L.B. player safe. Then came the second questionable call of the inning. With the bases now loaded af ter a walk and with two outs, the L.B. batter hit a dribbler down the third base line which pitcher Grady Gassner fielded and threw home for the force out and the Linn-Benton run ner coming from third crashed into the CCC catcher. The home-plate umpire failed to call the Benton runner out either due to a tag from Lehrer or for running into the catcher which is illegal if he has the ball. The run tied the game and Linn-Benton went on to win the game in the first of the extra innings. CCC has the game under protest with the appeals board expected to rule on the call- sometime this week. Nor mally, a judgment call cannot be protested but in fact the • Cougs are protesting the rule interpretation as apparently the umpire was unaware of, or did not fully understand that it is illegal to run directly into another player if he has the ball. According to Public Infor mation Specialist Doug Rober ts, Linn-Benton is “really sweating it out,” as L.B. is right Smelser For County Commisioner Position No. 3 Page 6 in the middle of the playoff race. If the board were to award the win to CCC, it could severely cripple L.B.’s chances of making the playoffs. On Saturday against Judson Baptist, the Cougs’ Jay Reid scattered 10 hits, all of them singles as CCC defeated J.B., 7-1. Grady Gassner was two for four while Steve Mills went one for three with two RBI’s. In the second game CCC spotted J.B. six runs in the first inning as Mike Golka allowed three singles, a double and a walk while retiring only one batter. Grady Gassner came in from third to relieve Golka and his results were about as good, as Gassner walked three and hit one bat ter. Fortunately the Cougs managed to regroup and came up with nine runs in the second as Mike Golka returned to the mound and was able to hold off J.B. The Cougs went on to win the game, 11-8. Jeff McCall went three for four in the win as did Grady Gassner. Mike Bell also con tributed with two RBI’s on two hits. Against Linfield’s J.V.s, the CCC glovers lost the first game, 10-9, before winning the second, 11-9. Jerry Sproul went three for four in both games including a grandslam home run in the second game. Todd Borgmeir , also had a fence clearing blast, . coming in the first game with a two-run round-tripper. Not to be left out, Mike Bell added a solo shot on the second game. record of 21.8. Martin also finished second in the 100 meters behind Brons«. Both the men’s and women’s track teams will be prepping f the regional meet to be held ■ Mt. Hood Community Collet Friday and Saturday. Sports shorts Men’s tennis The regular season has come to a close for the CCC men’s tennis team and although the team lost to OCE in an exhibition match last week, the real test will be this Friday and Saturday at the state tennis match at Mt. Hood Com munity College. Against OCE, only two of the Cougar netmen managed wins as Dave Thomas, playing at the number-one singles slot, won as did John Hazlett at number-five singles. The Coug’s first-doubles team of Dave Thomas and Dave Long suffered their first loss of the season which is hopefully not an omen of bad things to come. Intramurals The three-man intramural basketball league has come to a close as Bobby Barber’s team finished the season un defeated. Last week, Barber defeated the Maggots, 69-43, while Hoodye beat Vaught, 77-70, in overtime. The following Tuesday Barber roted Honas, 102-41, and Hoodye outlasted the Maggots, 66-56. There will now be a playoff between Barber and Hoodye to determine the overall winner. Just a reminder, sign-ups for coed intramural softball are now underway. On Thursday, the Cougs competed in the Best Ball Chapman at the Sun River Country Club in Bend. Dan Hix son and Bernie Pliska made up the first team as Randy Reid and John Killeen combined for the second. Hixson and Pliska combined for a 74 total while Reid and Killeen shot an 84. The two teams’ total score of 158 tied them with Chemeketa, and Central Oregon as Linn-Benton took top honors. The following day the team traveled to Ontario for a mat ch with COCC and Treasure Valley. Dan Hixson gained! medalist honors with a 73 buf COCC won the team title with ■ a 314, as Treasure Valley fired a 316 and CCC had a 318. On Saturday, the Cougs competed in the Treasure Valley Invitational at the same course and again finished in third place, this time behind Boise State and Treasure Valley.; Hixson was again the low scorer for the team with a 79.
