opinion Strike one The deadline is drawing near and still an agreement has yet to be reached. We may soon find ourselves out of school as the teachers’ strike draws near. C’mon school board, it’s resting on your shoulders now. What are you going to do? It sure sounds as if the teachers are serious, and they have right to be. . It looks as though the teachers have the students and other factors on their side. Just think, no other community college in Oregon has had its teachers strike before. Do you really want our College to have a “black mark,” alongside its name? If it is a game you are playing (as I’ve heard many say) it’s time to stop and look at the score. Your team is losing, you better hit some home runs and make your fans proud to be associated with the team. I can’t tell anyone how to run their business, but anyone can tell when someone is in danger and in deep water over their heads, so start thinking seriously at where you’re at. Make sure you don’t let the students drown. Give the teachers what they' want. Af- ter all, you’ve gotten your way two other times. Why not let the teachers carry the ball. All this figurative talk might sound a bit like beating around the bush. Well, that sounds like what the board is doing. CA. 94704 Page 2 As students, the possible teaicher strike threatens us all. I admit that as far as instructors go on this campus, there is some dead weight, as is true of any institution or business. In general, the quality of instruc tors is good: Having been to? three ■ other community colleges, I believe this to be true. In order to maintairi this quality of learning I advocate student supDort in favor of a pay raise for the instructors, as specified in tne> fact-finder report. • I also predict that the school board will reject this proposal, if past history is to be relied upon. What should we as students do if the teachers go on strike? I feel that legal action against the . school board is called for. These are the reasons I feel this way: 1. We paid for certain in structors-, which we as stu dents have f aith in. ' 2. They will be depriving us of tune we paid for. 3. We will lose money we have invested in our future. ; If we support the teachers,, we will be saying that we think they are worth it. If we don' will be getting second-rate structors ¿and a second education. Tom Hamill sprint 19600 S.
