Livestock judging Season comes to a close By Darren MacFarlane For The Print The collegiate livestock judging season has come to à close and the College judging teams take a breather until summer. Community college teams compete against one another in Junior College judging con tests. At most tournaments, each school fields a five-person team; however, at the Califor nia State University at Fresno competition ten-person teams participated. Clackamas ran two teams this year. The A team consisted of basically all second-year students or members not plan ning on attending the College next year. This team competed for Clackamas in all eligibility contests. The B team, made Up of freshman, will be next year’s top squad. In this way these judges can partake at all con tests without losing their eligibility plus sharpening their skills and gaining that ever- important experience. 1978 was only the second year that the College has fielded judging teams and yet compiled a successful season. The livestock judges of the College participated in five contests this year. First was the California State University engagement in Chico. The livestock crew placed fifth overall in the beef division and eleventh in total team placings. Team members were: Dave Jensen, Reed Campbell, Lean- na King, Merridee Smith, and Ken Grieb. In the meats con test, the team placed seventh overall with Reed Campbell taking the high individual honors. The California State Univer sity at Fresno contest was a non-eligibility and ten-person team affair. The top five scores per team made up the group’s final score. The College walked away with second place team honors in beef with Reed Campbell accepting the third high beef judge award. The top five scores belonged to: Cliff Schroeder, Reed Campbell, George Shay, Merridee Smith and Darren MacFarlane. This team placed fourth against all other teams participating. The Pacific International contest held in Portland yielded a sixth high individual, Kim Larson. Teams members were Kim Larson, Dave Jensen, Ken Evans, Jim Clymore, and Merridee Smith. At the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Kim Larson again placed in the top ten in dividuals. The team was the same as theP.I.’s. The last competition of the season was in Phoenix, Ariz., at the Arizona National Livestock Show. Teams from Oregon, California, Texas, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming and Colorado entered this contest. Clackamas returned to Oregon with honors for fifth high team in the beef and swine divisions with an overall team standing of seventh. Traveling to the south were Dave Jensen, Reed Campbell, Merridee Smith, Jim Newby and Darren Mac Farlane. But braving the elements for such a hike may have proven rewar ding, as nature’s defenses against unseasonable weather are an interestingthing to see. A nature hiker may wonder, for instance about the unusual position of the rhododendron. Curled up tightly, the plants are conserving moisture, due to the loss from the freezing tem- peratures. “I have been fascinated by all the unusual things that have happened.” said assistant director, Nan Clarke. “It is really interesting how nature is compensating itself for the dry, windy weather.” Clarke went on to em phasize, that none of the effects have been bad, only that it is interesting how nature “takes care of itself.” Maintenance, has been limited, due to the low tem peratures. Pruning, normally done at this time of year, is being reduced because of the staff’s concern that additional shock would damage the! life. Animal behavior, has had a marked change ini pensating for the uni weather. Rapid swimming from ducks, has kept the ELCl liquid'.
