briefs Pamphlets Historical, recreational, scientific information maps, and other kinds of reference material that is of interest is urgently needed for updating the pamphlet file at the College Library. Files on subjects such as Bigfood, space vehicles, wife beating, and cloning have already been started. Also, statistics, description, history, and travel information on Por tland and Oregon are available. “The pamphlet file has been out of date for some time, so we threw a lot of material out and are asking students, faculty and anyone who has material that would be of interest to bring it to the College library,” said Eileen Fujii, bibliographical searcher for the library. “We have ordered from the government documents that are statistical and philosophical and as much other material as our budget will allow,” Fujii said, T‘but we still need a lot more.” “In the past the pamphlet file was not used as much as the other resources in the library, so we are trying to improve the file by making it a quick and current source of information,” Fujii said. Crime report A fluorescent, invisible sub stance called detection powder is available for usé at the College as a deterrent to theft and vandalism, according to Stan Johnson, security super visor. When exposed to moisture, such as perspiration on the hands, the powder leaves a stain. It is bright purple in color and is detectible for at least 72 hours after the theft or van dalism occurs, according to Johnson. “The sociological effect within one’s peer group is very effective as the stain is clearly visible,” he said. Books, wallets and purses are high on the list of stolen property at the College, accor ding to Johnson. Last year there were 10 books reported stolen per term from individuals leaving them unattended, Johnson cited. “This happens all the time,” he said. “Be sure and write your name in all your books and don’t leave them lying around unattended.” This year parking violations and thefts have already been reported. Last week, 13 tickets were handed but at the College for unauthorized parking. A wallet containing $15 in cash and coin, and $45 in food stamps was stolen from the book drop outside the bookstore last week. The women’s locker room in Randall Hall was broken into over the weekend of Oct. 6, although nothing was stolen, Johnson said. Carving contest Halloween is approaching and that means Jack-O- Lanterns of every size and face will be scaring and delighting trick-or-treaters. Associated Student Gover nment is getting into the spirit of things, with its pumpkin car ving contest this Friday at noon. Mike McCarty, ASG president, said that there will be a 25 cent entry fee and a $10 gift certificate for the winner. ASG will also supply the pum pkins. During the contest, scheduled to last an hour, a disc jockey will be on hand to play tunes to carve by. The only problem is just where to stage the event, said McCarty. If weather permits, it will be held outside. If it rains, which is common in Oregon, the event will take place in the Community Center over sheets of plastic to protect the floor from the mess. The winner will be announ ced at the Halloween dance coming up on Oct. 28. The winner will also be presented with the gift certificate at the dance. 410 MOLALLA AVE.
