Parent and child grow togethe By Joy Feigum Of The Print Interpreting the intellectual, emotional and physical development of a child and applying this to their develop ment is explored in the classes “Living with Your Baby” and “Living with Your Toddler,” of fered this fall at the College. The instructors are well trained and have babies or tod dlers of their own. Sue Aronson and Doris Aasland are both pediatric nur ses and Kim Lee Kawai is a child development specialist. “There are aspects of raising babies and toddlers which, if you are not trained, you don’t notice. If you know them, it makes it more exciting,” said Eleanor Stubbs, Chairperson of Home economics education, and organizer of the program. Some of the subjects that will be discussed in the classes are nutrition and weaning in cluding the growth of the baby. “Babies and toddlers grow at different rates. In the class parents can gain a better un derstanding of the normal growth rate for the individual child,” Stubbs said. “It is an exciting time to be raising a child. It has been discovered that the baby and toddler can grasp more than parents realized and are capable of achieving a lot more than was thought possible in past years,” said Aronson, in structor for the class ‘Living with Your Toddler.’ The participation of both parents and children' in the classes make it interesting as toddlers are busily exploring new play things: Other toddlers and parents are involved in seminars and observation periods of the toddlers. Your Living Baby/Toddler offers paren- ts a better understanding of how their children grow. Much of class time is spent “observing” the children at play.
