Tax class scores high on examinations By Scott Starnes Of The Print Sixteen College tax students received their state licenses after scoring highest in the state exam inations. Donna Young, professional tax practitioner and College in structor of the class, said that her students did remarkably well this year even better than their good placing last year. "Of the four categories my students were required to com pete in, they passed them all with a high competency average," Young said. The exam, the Oregon Tax Service Examiners, is divided in to four categories which are Federal law, Oregon law, Oregon percent level. This indicates that many of the students scored very close to 100 percent ac curacy," Young said. Young said that these students were involved in her beginning pre-licensing income tax class which is a 60 hour basic class. The state of Oregon, the only state in America which requires each potential tax practitioner to be licensed before professional employment, requires that a class such as this one be taken before taking the state exams, she said. As for the College's role in her classes highest passing rate and average score, Young said that "The College has given the income tax department good lab oratory assistance and audio vis ual aid. state tax law itself and a problem area where students are given a variety of tax problems which they must solve, Young said. "During classtime, it was man datory for each student to cover each one of these areas. They had to be well acquainted with the material of these areas for they could not pass the state exam scoring any lower than 70 percent," she said. Young said that her student's competency scores were 85 for the Federal law, 82 for Oregon law, 98 for Oregon state law and 81 percent in the problem solv ing categories. "These are exceptional aver ages considering that some of the students placed just at the 70 "The College does an excell ent job assisting the tax program as compared to other communi ty colleges. Many students seek our campus if they are planning to work in the tax preparing field," Young said. After their licensing, it appears that employment opportunities are promising. "Most of my stu dents who want jobs get them," Young said. "I've hired four for myself, another one is working for Oregon City's Department of Revenue, another is working for Dennis Stuck, tax consultant, in Oregon City." The annual day of entertain ment and education for the sen ior citizens of Clackamas Counjv is sponsored by the county's Retired Senior Volunteer Pro gram (RSVP), the College and other county agencies. Barbeque The day's events, which will take place in the College's Com munity Center Mali, will include entertainment and lunch done in a "western style" matching the theme of the day. Western style dress is encouraged. Saturday, May 20, from 1 p.m. to 7 p?m., Milk Creek Lit tle School is preparing a chicken barbeque. The barbeque is at the community school, south of Mu lino, off Hwy. 213 to Meadow brook-Colton. Call 829-2286 for further directions. The menu includes one-half chicken ($2.75) or one-fourth chicken ($2.00), baked beans, cole slaw, roll and drink. Bingo with prizes will be played from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be door prizes, bingo and other table games, displays, dancing and a costume contest.
