opinion by R. Diggs I It's never too late j We would like to urge any interested students to £ take advantage of the next three days and turn in petitions for their candidacy in government offi- % cers. S Any student who feels they might be even a £ little bit interested, is encouraged to make the ef- :£ fort and try for office. Who knows, they just £ might win. At the very least it would provide some healthy competition for those already com- £ mitted to run. We feel that competition would generate more $: interest in the student government elections and § thus more interest in student government itself, Added competition would also cause those who £ are unsure of their motives for seeking office to £ examine themselves more closely and perhaps make them reconsider a decision made, perhaps, on the spur of the moment. £ Students who feel that they aren't well known £ enough or perhaps have never been involved in £ student government before, should remember that £ most student government leaders learn by doing £ and have very little experience to begin with. It is also not necessary to know everyone in £ school to win an election. Last year, Mike Me- Carty won his bid for ASG president by 76 votes. £ It stands to reason that anyone who can get the £ support of at least 76 people has a good chance of £ being a part of next year's student government. Any student who feels that they have leadership £ and organizational skills, or who feels that they £- have ideas and suggestions that would help student £ government perform more efficiently should ser- £ iously consider running in this year's elections. After all, they might win and we might all bene- g fit. £ :£ £ £ £ S £ £ £ £ £ £ :•:■ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ Advising process revamped at LBCC A Qi x v 3 Tf fa Bob Talbott, director of Guid ance Services, sees the problem as one of implementing the ad vising process rather than a pro blem with the advising program itself. As Talbott puts it, "The sys tem, as devised, is adequate. It needs better publicity to students and faculty. It needs better implementation at the division level." The recommendations made by the two LBCC committees seem to bear this out. The committees, which are made up of faculty and students from various divisions on campus, have jointly recommended that names of specific advisers be listed in the catalog and class schedule I ADMÎT ONE THINS ABOUT THAT GRINGO GOVERNMENT.MIÔÜEL ALL THE LATEST^W^^ £ Other viewpoints Editor's note: The following is a reprint of an editorial that appeared in the April 5 issue of the Commuter, Linn-Benton Community College's student newspaper. Students at LBCC will know where to go for help in advising if the recommendations made by both the admissions and grade standards committee and the in structional affairs committee are accepted. The committees' decisions to study the advising process came about as a result of concern (mainly about the instructor's role in advising) expressed by several members of a committee from the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges evalua ting LBCC in the fall of 1977. ms feedback Vote McCarty To the Editor: Those students who have con sidered running for student gov ernment offices but who, upon further consideration, decided that they didn't have the time or energy to devote to the job should consider voting for Mike McCarty. McCarty is a full-time busi ness student with a full-time job who has found the time and energy to do an excellent job as this year's ASG president and he is coming back for more? More what you say? More trying to juggle homework a- round endless committee meet ings and more giving up several weekends a month to attend conferences and seminars that help him serve students better. Along with a job.and school, Mike has done many things that will benefit students at this in stitution for many years to come. He has arranged for a legal-aid service for students that will enable them to obtain legal ad vice and ehlp without spending a lot of money. He has set up an inter-campus video informa tion system to provide constant, timely and accurate information to students about things that are happening on campus. One of his more important accomplishments is that of or ganizing a student government THEY ARE HONEST? THEY MEAN WHAT THEY SAY? x—' HOWSQ PEDROf that is more in touch with the students needs and desires and giving ASG senators the pro fessional leadership needed to accomplish things this year. Mike has done all this this year while still learning the skills and techniques necessary to deal with those in power in other areas of the school and commun ity. He is asking for a chance to give students the benefit of this knowledge and experience next year. &TH8 i editor Happie Thacker * news editor Cyndi Bacon * arts editor| Lisa Chitty * sports editor Ann Breyne * copy editor Scott Starnes] * photo editor Brian Snook * staff writers Randy Frank, Jimi McCaffrey, Mary Madeland, Shawn Parkhurst * photographers] Sam Baer, Ted McKenna * assistant photo editor Lorraine Strat i ton * production manager Mary Cuddy * business manager Pauli Byers * professional advisor Randy Clark * office personnel] Crystal Tompkins, Tommi Davidson The Print, a member of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Asso- 1 dation, aims to be a fair and impartial journalistic medium cov- 1 ering the campus community as thoroughly as possible.
