May 21, 1970 THE GRANTONIAN 3 Generals nip Cleveland; Girls'golf team top Green division teams plans for future Supported by pitching efforts of Robin Sinclair and sophomore Mike Nelson, Grant baseballers nipped the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in eight innings to give the Gen erals a shot at Madison and the city Crown. Grant started off the scoring in the first inning when June Jones singled to plate Artie Wil son. The next scoring was in the sixth and seventh when Cleve land scored one run in each in ning. The Generals, down 2-1 going into the last inning, threatened when George Morgan stretched a double into a triple by “rip ping” the Indians’ third baseman and knocking the ball loose. With George on third, Al Reamer laid down a perfect bunt to score Morgan. An inning later Jones singled home Nick Rulli for the winning run. Grant has four all-city play ers on the team. Artie Wilson and Robin Sinclair are first team all-city players with June Jones and Dan Percich both honorable mention. Grant now enters a best-of- three series with Madison which is now in progress. A girls’ golf team is made up of six girls and Mrs. Diane Cedros, the girls’ golf coach, only had six girls turn out for the team. rallied in the sixth inning but failed to score enough runs to catch the Senators. Behind 2-0 going into the sixth inning the Generals scored on hits by Kevin McCune and Brady Sigurdson but failed to score a second run when a mis cue at the plate halted the chance of tieing the game. Boys' golf team wins division title; Myer cited as 'top' Boys’ Golf Coach Mr. Vern Lowery said this year’s golf team “surprised some people.” The boys had upset victories over Lincoln and Wilson, both title contenders, in taking the Green division crown. Grant came in second in the city los- ing the city championship to Red division champ Madison. Number one player on the team was Tim Myers, who also proved himself to be one of the four top players in the city. Be ing one of the top four players in the city Tim wins a berth to the state playoffs set for May 18-19 at Glendoveer golf course. In speaking of next year’s prospects Mr. Lowery said, “If some people stay out of trouble and others off skis the team should be very good.” Top play ers for next year include Ed Fisher, Tom Hagga, Brad Wright, Perry Stroud, Tom Cal lahan and Pat O’Donnell. The girls’ record was six wins, two losses, and one tie with losses going to Madison and Jackson. All of the team matches were played at Rose City Golf Course. JUNIOR WILSON WALKER leads Rick Hibbs, senior, and Rick Toler of Jackson in the low hurdles in the city dual track meet at Jackson. Spikers retain 'loss free'record; enter district meet tonight, tomorrow Grant’s dual meet record re mains intact as the Generals dumped Jackson for the PIL dual meet crown by a score of 80 to 56. Grant won nine events, lost five and tied in the high jump. THE 440 relay team started well but was disqualified for an exchange zone violation. Greg Graham took the 100 yard dash with a time of 10.3, just .4 off the PIL best. The two-mile was won by three Generals who tied for first place. Don Johnson, Scott Bailey and Scott Jackson came in with identical times of 10:05.0. Fremont Carolyn Lumber took on all opponents and won the state girls’ singles tennis tournament. Carolyn lost only one set to Sara Follen of St. Mary’s, 6-4, 10-12, Presents Student of the Week Nancy Martin The girls on this year’s team were Captain Cathy York, Jan ice Taggard, Sherie Powell, Nancy Martin, Shelley Stamm, and Shauna Frazier. Miss Mar tin is the only senior, while the remaining five girls will be re turning lettermen next year. She was also one of the top six finalists for the Rose Festival Court. Last year Nancy was presi dent of the Usher Squad and was Sopho more Girls' League Vice-president. This match was the final and Carolyn emerged once again with the state title. Coach Julian Amaya said of Carolyn, “She is in a class by herself. In the boys’ singles, Lance Zaklin was beaten in the first round. However, he won every match in the consolation bracket and he became number one in it. “Number one in the consola tion bracket is the highest posi tion that any. Grant boy has been, for as long as I can remem ber,” stated Coach Amaya. The girls’ doubles from Grant were Sheri Horning and Chris Collins, Diane Schwietzer and Peggy West. The high hurdles were won by the Raiders, Steve Rooney took second and Rick Hibbs placed third. The district meet will be tak ing place today and tomorrow. Winners in the district meets will go to state. Coach Mark Cotton said, “We hope to send about eight or ten athletes to state.” IN THE discus, Greg Schu- kart hurled a 160-0. Steve Hop kins threw the javelin 205-2 feet. Second and third places in the pole vadlt were taken by Greg Schukart at 12-3 and Rick Wiedmaier at 12-0, respectively.
