May 1 6, 1969 Spikers gain city dual meet crown an attempt to capture the city crown. The 440 relay team start ed things off for the Gen erals by turning in a 44.7 effort. The spikers then gained one of their four sweeps as Steve Hopkins heaved the javelin lt)2’6” to IRENE WASHINGTON makes her leap during girls’ city track meet. The girls claimed second place in the meet behind Jeffer son. Frosh tracksters undefeated; compete in city meet Thursday Scoring an average of 100 points or better for every meet, the freshman track squad will enter the city meet Thursday un defeated. Coach Frank Wolf expects a “tussle from Franklin” as they have moved some of their frosh back from varsity for the city meet. Lincoln and Marshall also possess good individual track sters. Two school records have been set by the frosh trackmen: a new 440 relay time of 45.8, and a city’ record was broken in the 880 at 1:38.1. Outstanding performances on the freshman track team came from: Tom Lester, Mike Phil lips, and Roby Johnson, sprints; Rick Eatmonand Toby Mullen in the 440 and hurdles; Les Franz, mile; Tom Lavine and Kim Isaacson, % mile; Conway McCallister and Mark Jensen, long jump and sprints; Jeoff Campbell, javelin; Steve Be night, and Mike Hermen, dis cus; Chris Heirich, shot put; and Scott Heller, shot and Vz mile. Attend the Track Meet Rick Eatmen has replaced Robert Bates op the varsity level» ih sprints. All in all, the freshmen have had a very fipe season, keeping in the Grant tradition. Boys' tennis team enters tournament For the tennis team, it was a very good season. According to Julian Amaya, “This is the best season that we’ve had for the last four years. One of the high lights of this season is the fact that we are the only school in the district to send both singles and doubles to the state tourna ment. Jeff Golden, a senior and the tennis captain, will be partici pating in singles. He captured third place in the district. This is the first year that he has par ticipated in a state match. Soph omores Ramon Corona and Lance Zaklan are participating in doubles. The team came in second in the district, losing only to Wil son. They lost one match by one point. The state tennis tournament will be held in Corvallis today BBM| and tomorrow. “We will be rep resenting the league pretty much I* too,” stated Coach Amaya. Jeff Golden commented, “I’m really happy to go. I didn’t think I’d get that far.” During the season, Coach Amaya felt that the toughest op ponents were Cleveland, 3-2; Benson, 4-1; and Wilson, 2-3. * Party Favors * Decorations claim victory. Dave Ed wards claimed second while Rick Fisher was third. Don Johnson turned in a 4:34.9 clocking in the mile to defeat his nearest opponent by seven seconds. The two-mile run was a runaway for the Generals as the team gained their second sweep. Scott Jackson captured the event with a 9:41.5 timing. Ralph Bakkensen stayed true to form and captured the shot put with a 56’8” toss. He also captured vic tory in the discus by flip ping the disc 148’10”. The next sweep the Generals gained was in the 220-yard dash. Rick Eatmon captured the event with a time of 23.0. Robert Bates, who has been out for most of the sea son, captured second place with a time of 23.0 also. The G-Men also came through with a sweep in the 100-yard dash as Jim Gilbert gained vic tory with a lifetime best of 10.0. Rick Eatmon claimed second with a time of 16.1. This is Eat- mon’s lifetime best also and it is a freshman record. John Othus claimed victory in the 880 with a time of 2:05.5. The Generals also captured the mile relay with a time of 3:32.5. Tonight the spikers face a tough preliminary' meet at Madi son. The winners of the meet will go to the city finals next week. Generals fall in extra innings, 4-3 The varsity baseball team picked four wins in action last week but dropped a close decision to Madison with only two games to play in the second round of action. The loss to Madison dropped the G-Men to second place while the Senators claimed the lead JEFFERSON WAS the first to fall to the Generals as Robin Sih- clair held the Demos to a single hit. The G-Men struck at the Jeffer son team for five runs during the first three frames while gaining the 5-0 win. The Jackson sandbaggers were the next to fall to the Generals as Greg Walsh equaled Robin Sinclair’s one-hitter. The team out- scored the Raiders 7-2 to show their power at the plate. ROOSEVELT WAS the next to feel the power of the Generals as the Teddies helped the team to a 7-0 record for the second half. Thursday proved a good day for the team as Jamie Eoff pitched a 6-2 win over Franklin. The win put the Generals’ second-half rec ord at 8-0. The Generals had defeated every other team in the city by last Friday but dropped a very close 4-3 decision to Madison after 11 innings. Madison picked up their first three runs in the first and third frames while the G-Men claimed theirs in the fourth and sixth. Jim Officer pitched the win for the Senators while Robin Sinclair was handed the loss. The Generals rolled up 85 points on their way to victory over Red di vision champion Marshall last Friday.
