Harriers defeat Senators
by Bruce Fishback
By capturing 12 firsts and ty
ing in 16 events, the varsity har
riers again proved their track
power by downing Madison Fri
day 81 2/3 to 46 1/3. This win
kept the defending state cham
pions on top of the PILr standings
again this week.
In gaining the win, the
Generals picked up three
sweeps. These came in the
100 - yard dash, 220 - yard
dash and the discus throw.
Jim Gilbert claimed victory
in both the 100 and 220
while Ralph Bakkensen led
the sweep in the discus.
Gilbert turned in times of
10.4 and 22.8 in his events while
Bakkensen flipped the discus 158
feet. This gives Bakkensen the
best record in the city this year.
He also captured victory in the
shot with a distance of 56’ 11%”.

best time of the day in the
440 relay with a 44.2 tim

Girls' tennis team
looks for city title
“We are potentially able to
take the city meet,” stated Vir
ginia Behm, coach of the girls’
varsity tennis team. Mrs. Behm
feels that the biggest triumph for
the girls came when the tennis
members defeated their greatest
rival, Wilson, with a score of
4-1.
In other matches, the girls
have also proven their ability.
Their victorious scores have
been as follows: Against Mar
shall 3-1, Washington 4-1, James
Monroe 4rl, Jefferson 5-0, Jack-
son 5-0, and Roosevelt 5-0.
The meets are held every
Tuesday and Thursday; all the
matches are home matches.
The outstanding players in
singles are: Kaye Toekrud, Car
olyn Lumber, and Kim Severson.
The best players who participate
in doubles are: Alice Bailey, Ann
Belerby, Sharing Horining and
Myrna West. Sophomores play
ing varsity are Jane Oliver and
Peggy Hiltner.
Generals trounced by Madison 12-0
Last week the Generals’ base
ball team picked up a couple of
important wins with good strong
pitching and fine defensive play,
but on Monday of this week it
was defeated by the Madison
Senators 12-0, at Madison.
In last week’s games the
Generals defeated Jackson
and Franklin by scores of
5-1 and 1-0, respectively.
The game with Jackson was
a make-up game, and Dan
Percich went the distance
allowing only three hits.
Robin Sinclair led the hit
ting with two triples.
In the other game, against
Franklin, Jamie Eoff pinch hit-
ted in the bottom of the eighth
inning and got a single with the
bases loaded to ice the win for
the Generals. Dick Paulson, who
pitched that game, has one of
the lowest earned run averages
in the city.
A SECRETARIAL
CAREER
Madison’s game, during
which the Generals’ nine
were felled 12-0, seemed to
be Madison’s turn at taking
the apples as they punched
out base hits and played a
fine defensive game.
The second round of play, in
which the records of the teams
are started over again and looks
for a second-half champion,
started yesterday, < weather per
mitting. The two winners of the
first and second round will meet
when the season is over to de
cide the city champion, and
award a trip to state.
