January 24, 1969 THE GRANTOÑIAN 3 'Nielsen's Animals' on top G-Men stop Lincoln 27-20 ARTIE WILSON blocks a Lincoln shot from behind as Mike Naylor looks on during the Lincoln encounter last Friday. Cagers sweep past Lincoln Ì ready for cross division play by Bruce.Fishback Rolling up 77 points in 32 minutes of playing time, the varsity cagers swept past a weak Lincoln team by 46 points in action last Friday. By downing the Cardinals the Generals increased their league record to 4-0, and their season record to 10-0. This win kept'the Generals even with the Madison Sen ators in a tie for the Green Division lead which was broken last Tuesday when the G-Men met the Senators on the Madison court. Holding a 30 point lead after three quarters the Generals let loose during the fourth and surged in 29 points to the Car dinals’ nine to increase their lead to 46 points and a final score of 77-31. Mike Naylor gained 14 points to lead the team in a game which showed 11 G- Men gaining points. Close behind Naylor were Don Lincoln, Bill Flowers, and Artie Wilson, all of whom scored in the double figures. The high scoring and a good defense kept the Generals on top from the first. The cagers allowed only 15 pionts to be scored against them during the first half and only 16 during the second. Five members of the team scored more than Lincoln’s high scorer and two members tallied the same as him. Tonight the Generals face Wil son as cross division play be gins. The Trojans stand 2-2 in their league. The Trojans were ranked in the top of their league but have been dropped twice. BROADWAY An optimistic view is held by Miss Carolyn Fitzwater about her girls basketball team. The team is a member of the inter scholastic basketball league which is sponsored by the Park Bureau. The league runs for six weeks and incorporates schools from all over the Portland Met ropolitan area. There have been 35 girls turn ing out for basketball this year and they are split into two teams. The number one team will play Catlin Gabel Tuesday and then return Thursday to compete with Madison, at Madi son. “Madison, Marshall, and Grant are usually the three top teams in the league and if we can beat Madison and Marshall we will probably take the league cham pionship,” stated Miss Fitzwater. They are undefeated this year and their closest match was a 33-25 win over Lincoln, preced ing the varsity match last Friday night. Pinning their opponents were Billy Dyer at 157 lbs., Bob Whitaker at 120 lbs., and Mark Johnson at 95 lbs. VARSITY WRESTLING HOLLYWOOD Poly - Clean WE DO ALL THE WORK only teams that have beaten the Generals thus far this season. The league record as of last Monday was four wins and no losses. Coach White’s second team varsity has a record to be proud of and unmatched by anyone this season. They have a record of twelve wins and no losses as of last Monday. Girls' basketball tops; look for first city title bupon • Razor Cutting by Gary Cogill “It wasn’t one of our better meets,” commented Coach Rob ert Shewbert after the varsity wrestling team handed Lincoln a 27-20 loss in the Lincoln gym last Friday night. The grapplers withstood a strong Lincoln team and gained vital points from pins. Getting the pins were David Gray at 141 lbs., and Larry Yakimi at 178 lbs. Both David and Larry pinned their opponents in the first round. Gaining decisions against their opponents were Merle Johnson at 98 lbs., Bill Curry at 136 lbs., Mike Rienecker at 148 lbs., and Ray Denfeld at 168 lbs. Ward Bruner was the only wrestler with a forfeit. So far this year the varsity squad boasts an over-all record of ten wins and two losses.
