November 15, 1968 THE GRANTON I AN 3 G-Men bomb Franklin 28-0, gain State playoff by Bruce Fishback Smash, rip, zip, rumble were were the sounds of the varsity football team which became then 1968 city champions by rocking the Franklin Quakers 28-0 last Saturday. Tonight the Generals travel to meet David Douglas in the quarter-finals of the state championship playoffs. David Douglas has remained on top of the state polls ever since the start of the season. The Generals have remained seventh and eighth since the start; but this week they jumped to fourth. The winner of tonight’s game will travel to meet the winner of the Lake Oswego- Albany game. The Scots are headed by Mike DeSylvia, Stan Simmens, Dan Palmer and Dave Herrington. Douglas has won seven games by 30 points. Their .closest game came from Sunset whom they beat. The Scots’ sports editor claims that they will win with a score of about 20-7. Coach Frank Wolf takes a more optimistic view of the game. He simply states, “I think we will win. Jefferson was our turning point. Our defense has really come up since then and our offense—well, look at last . week’s score and guess for your self.” The G-Men made the first move when John Percich picked off a Franklin pass at their 45-yard line and , June Jones tossed a pass to BiUHjelm. Tlie Generals then-waited un til the last minute to score again as June Jones set up the play by tossing two passes, one to Steve Hopkins and one to Dan Mayo. Three plays later John Percich ran across from the one-yard line. Gary Horton then placed the ball neatly between the up rights to add a point and end the scoring. JV's claim title; Frosh drop two ROBERT BATES travels around right end to pick up yardage for the G-Men during the game with Franklin last Saturday. The game ended Three plays later Danny Percich tossed Robin Sin clair a pass which he car ried for 29 yards and six points. To make the Quak ers confused the Generals set up for a kick but June Jones tossed a pass to Dan Percich for the extra point. with the Generals electrocuting Franklin 28-0 and claiming a trip to state. The Generals’ next score came with 57 seconds left in the first half. The play started with a fumble and ended with a goal as Bobby Bates picked up a dropped lateral and bombed 28 yards to the end zone. At the start of the second half Franklin kicked the ball to Bates and as a result became the receivers as he grabbed the ball on the Gen erals’ 17-yard line and slipped through the Quaker defense to go the full 83 yards to add another six points to the scoreboard. The extra point came when Defending their title of “un defeated,” the Junior Varsity football team trampled Cleve land 12-0 in their Thursday night game. The Frosh team lost to the Indians with a score of 7-12. “The names of the outstanding players in the JV game would be too long to list,” bragged Coach Bill White. Coach White went on to ex plain that the sophomore team members have remained unde feated since they were freshmen; while the defensive team has given up only two touchdowns, or 12 points, to their opponents. Playing seven games so far this year, against Marshall, Franklin, Lincoln, Jefferson, Madison, Benson, and Cleveland, the offensive players have racked up a total of 111 points. Swimmers stroke to second place The varsity swimming team became the second team this year to bring home a trophy. The Generals captured second place in the city swim meet last Fri day night at the Multnomah Athletic Club. The G-Men first captured the 200-yard medley relay. The boys on the relay swim 50 yards, each boy a different stroke. John Evans swam the backstroke, Mike Phillips the breaststroke, Mark Powell the butterfly, and Daryl Pape the freestyle. Bill Prows, Mark Powell, Rich Mills and Jeff Pittman stroked to victory in the 400-yard free- "HOME OF GRANT HIGH KEGLERS" Timber Lanes Bowling Center style with a time of 3:37.8 to smash the standing record set by the Generals last year by seven seconds. Mike Phillips broke his own record in the breaststroke with a time of 1:05.7. This is two sec onds faster than the record which he set last year. Rich Mills fluttered in second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.9. This time was good enough to give him a trip to state. Bruce Parker sewed up the diving competition after hitting the board the night before dur ing practice. This mishap left Parker with seven stitches and a very big headache. “I am very pleased with the team,” stated Mr. Carl Rubin, swim coach. “The team had a very successful season,” he add ed.
