October 18, 1968_________ THE GRANTONIAN_________ 3 Kick conquer^ Jef£ G-Men overcome Demos! by Bruce Fishback One four-yard jaunt and one golden-toed kick was all it took to overcome Jefferson 7-6 last Friday. By defeating Jeff the Generals managed to keep up their tie for first place with Madison which will be broken tonight when the two leaders clash at Madison. The G-Men were the first to hit paydirt as Bobby Bates .picked his way to the goal line from four yards out to end a 53-yard drive with 1:33 left in the first quarter. Glen Butherus then kicked the PAT which proved in the long run to be the deciding factor in the game. Jefferson’s lone goal came during the third quarter as Woodrow Green pushed his way across from the one-yard line. This TD ended a 14-play 50-yard drive. The PAT that would have tied the game went wide to the right; this one fateful play sealed the Demos’ fate. This win broke a rivalry be tween the two teams as the Gen erals have now won 19 games to the Demos’ 18 in competition against each other. “The offense’s blocking was very poor,” stated Coach Frank Wolf, “but the defense was real ly good; no, great!” Coach Wolf cited Ray Denfeld as playing an outstanding defensive game and Gary Cogill as playing a good ED GEIST (83) and John Percich (13) move in and tackle a Jeff man. Carolyn Walker races in cross country meets by Debby Liesch How would it feel to be fifth in the nation in girls’ cross coun try? Just ask sophomore Carolyn- Walker. During a meet at Seaside this last summer, she ran the two- mile cross country in 12:20, which rated her fifth in the na tion. Carolyn started running on the track team last April, and placed second in the city. At the beginning of the cross country season this fall she ran the two- mile. Since April she has partici pated in about ten meets, win ning both ribbons and plaques. She clocked in at 9:10, to win the 14-and-over division 1%- mile cross country run at Ga- brial Park on October 5. At a telegraphic meet with Montana at Tigard high on Oc tober 12, she took first place in the mile-and-a-half, with a time of 9:16. In addition to running, she finds time to participate on the swim team, and manages to maintain a 3.8 average. “She has a lot of talent for a sophomore girl,” stated boys’ track coach Mark Cotton. “Very few sophomore boys could beat her over the two miles. Forfeit Scott Jackson breaks second cross country record The varsity harriers jacked up this year’s win record again to 11-0 by defeating Jackson, Roosevelt, and Jefferson at Grant last Wednesday, and now face the city meet October 25. Scott Jackson, who broke Grant’s course record last week with a time of 12:12.8, decided that it was not good enough and ripped through the course 6.7 seconds faster with a time of 12:06.1. This time was 25.8 sec onds faster than his closest com- petitor, Mike Brown from Jack- son, who had a time of 12:35.3. General Greg Schukart romped in third with a time of 12:41.6 and Don Johnson claimed fourth with 12:52.3. Mike Naylor placed sixth in 13:05 and Steve Gerrard captured seventh in 13:13. According to Mr. Cotton, al most all members of the team improved their times by 20 sec onds over the last meet, which was also held at Grant. On the JV scene the Sergeants also captured first place when they defeated Jackson, Roose velt, and Jefferson by totaling up only 19 points. Howard Un- keles captured first place by completing the course in 9:37.1. George Bassindale from Jackson placed second in 9:41. Doug Ov ens claimed third, stopping- the clock at 9:48. Craig Breese came in fourth timed at 9:52 while Scott Bailey ran a close fifth in 9:53. Scott Evansen ended the Grant scoring by claiming sixth in 9:54. On the freshman level, Court ney Huff captured first place as the Privates rolled past Jackson, Roosevelt, and Jefferson by to taling only 21 points.
