May 10, 1968 THE GRANTONIAN 3 Trackmen win, set records by Julie Ferry In the final round of Portland Interscholastic League track meets, two state and one PIL dual meet records were set. Ron Brown and Bruce Mc- Cormmach came through for the Generals, with a state best in the low hurdles and a PIL dual best in the mile. Steve Krohn of Madison added a state best in the 220. Brown dashed through the low hurdles in a time of 19.9, bettering his old record by one- tenth of a second. Girls1 tennis team first in city matches “They said it couldn’t be done,” explained Miss Virginia Behm, girls’ tennis coach, as the team won 5-0 against Jefferson last Friday and took first place in city competition. “According to the other coaches, Grant was supposed to be one of the weakest teams ini the league,” stated Miss Behm. Recognition should go to the members of the tennis team who devoted their entire efforts to the success of the team. According to Coach Behm, special recognition should be at tributed to the first and second singles players, Carolyn Lum ber and Sherrie Horning. Caro lyn went undefeated throughout the season and Sherrie played the difficult number one posi tion. Myrna West and Marcy Mc- Killip, second doubles team, also deserve recognition,” added Miss Behm. This season was com posed of six dual meets. Patronize Your Advertisers Track team gets title; girls ready for state The girls’ track team clinched the city title Friday after de feating their four opponents in the district meet with 169 points. 12 girls also qualified for state competition. “They must have saved every thing for Friday because they really exploded then,” comment ed Miss Carolyn Fitzwater, girls’ track coach. First place winners were Rita Harris in discus, javelin and shot put, and Kathy Eckroth in the mile and 880.yard run. Others qualifying for state are Jane Stillwell, Sylvia Lo max, Laurie Hufinor, Carolyn Walker and Kathy Cook. Also included are Cheryl Devaney, Judy Shaw, Debbie Bowls, Lilly Sevier and Betty Harris.
